About Garrett

Overlooking Deep Creek Lake  and the Wisp ski area in the Allegheny Mountains of western Maryland, Garrett’s 62-acre campus is surrounded by the forests, lakes, farms, and whitewater rivers that are the outdoor classrooms of its Adventure Sports and Natural Resources & Wildlife Technology students.  These “signature” programs focus on sustainable use of the natural environment.  Garrett also offers exceptional educational opportunities in Business and Information Technology and Juvenile Justice.

The College has acquired a national and international reputation for its Adventure Sports degree, which is unique in the United States, and a regional reputation for its program in Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology.  Garrett is also a national leader in the use of advanced telecommunications and computer technology to serve the needs of rural communities.  In addition, Garrett was the first community college in Maryland to acquire a dormitory for its students.

Garrett offers transfer programs leading to Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degrees, career programs leading to the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and a variety of one-year certificate programs as well as noncredit classes.  Garrett’s faculty is committed to instructional excellence, high academic standards, and learner-centered support for students.  A low student-faculty ratio offers students individualized attention in their studies. Garrett College graduates are well prepared for success in their chosen careers and for successful transfer to the many institutions with which Garrett holds transfer articulation agreements. Garrett students who transfer to a Maryland college typically outperform transfers from other community colleges.  The Garrett Foundation awards merit and/or need based scholarships each year and Federal financial aid as well as the Earn and Learn program can assist students with financial help toward their education.

Garrett College is truly a community working together toward its mission “... to provide quality higher education, lifelong learning, and access to the universe of information so that individuals, businesses, and the community can achieve personal, entrepreneurial, and collective success.” The College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and is approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.  Garrett is a member of the American Association of Community Colleges, the Maryland JUCO Conference, and the NJCAA, Region XX.   Garrett’s intercollegiate sports offerings include men's basketball, women's basketball, men's baseball, women's volleyball, and golf.

Whatever your interests, talent, or age, there is a special place for you at Garrett College. You will discover a stimulating learning environment in a small, close-knit, educationally-supportive college.
