President's Welcome
Dr. Paul Dauphinais, President of Garrett College

Opened in 1971, Garrett College is located in the mountains of western Maryland surrounded by a beautiful all season natural environment. Noted for its small size and personal concern for students, the college is more a family than an institution. The rural surroundings set the tone for the quality of institutional life, creating the relaxed, informal, and friendly style of the people who teach and learn at the college.

Garrett has earned a reputation for academic excellence. Garrett is especially noted for its three signature programs which have spread its reputation for excellence and innovation: Adventure Sports, Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology, and Juvenile Justice. Its outstanding faculty is dedicated first and foremost to student learning. Each learner begins at his or her level of readiness and is challenged to stretch to greater levels of achievement. Classes are small, typically averaging fourteen students per faculty member.

Garrett graduates are well prepared for success in their chosen careers and for successful transfer to the many institutions with which Garrett holds transfer articulation agreements. With a high rate of frequency, Garrett students who transfer to a Maryland college outperform transfers from the other fifteen community colleges as well as native students at the receiving institution. In the last year five Garrett graduates have been awarded Jack Kent Cook Scholarships to attend Bucknell University, a highly selective institution in Pennsylvania noted for its business and engineering programs. The college also has many partnerships with businesses and other organizations to enable students to gain meaningful work experience while in college and be ready for work and life after college. In its effort to prepare students for working in an increasingly globalized world, Garrett College has several international programs so that students can become aware of and understand other cultures from around the globe. You can have the opportunity to meet, study, and become friends with students from around the world while at Garrett.

Garrett also boasts a rich social and extracurricular life. The college manages two modern residence halls and has a food service for all students. Garrett also has an active and competitive athletic program with teams in men’s and women’s basketball; men’s baseball; women’s volleyball and softball; golf; and adventure sports. Students can ski at nearby Wisp Ski Resort; enjoy water sports on Maryland’s largest fresh water resource, twelve mile long Deep Creek Lake; rock climb in nearby West Virginia; bike or hike on the 150 miles of state-maintained forest trails; or whitewater on some of the best canoe, kayak, and rafting rivers in the United States.

The college offers a full array of financial aid support to students including special tuition rates for nearby West Virginians who enroll in designated programs. Other special work opportunities are available to out-of-state and out-of-county students.

Dedicated to learning and achievement, Garrett offers an outstanding education, unique programs, and a friendly environment in which students learn, recreate, and develop amidst the natural beauty of an unspoiled outdoors.
