Welcome to Distance Learning
Welcome to Distance Learning at Garrett College.
We strive to create a convenient, flexible, and
affordable way to learn. Distance learning allows you to take
classes that work around your schedule. You
may supplement your in-class schedule with distance learning
courses, or obtain an
Associates degree in General Education completely online.
Distance learning courses are not for everyone. They require
a unique commitment from you. To succeed in DL
classes, you must be motivated, have good time management skills,
and possess self-discipline. Distance learning courses are
not easier or harder than on-campus courses, but they do require
a special kind of dedication.
We strongly advise that you take stock of yourself and examine
your learning preferences before taking a DL course to see
if this learning environment is right for you.
Garrett College students MUST have a minimum of
2.0 GPA to enroll in distance learning courses.
Learn
how to get started!
While most
online courses are done over the Internet, some of our courses
use television, cable TV, video-tapes, audio tapes, computers,
video discs and other media. Some
can be taken at home while others require using media on
campus. Garrett
College offers several courses that are linked to distance
learning classroom sites throughout Garrett County
and the State.
Some courses are designated as "Hybrid". A
hybrid course is a blend of face-to-face instruction with
online learning. In a hybrid course, learning is typically
50% in-class and 50% online. As a result, the amount of time
on campus is reduced. Hybrid courses will identify the on-campus
schedule.
As in "traditional" courses,
printed materials, text, and often a study guide are used
in the class. All courses are managed by a faculty
member who provides a syllabus, holds review and study sessions,
and serves as a learning resource in the course. All
costs and credits earned are the same as for comparable on-campus
courses and students have access to the same services, activities
and peer support as do on-campus students.
Interactive Video
Courses
These courses are delivered
via compressed video technology on a network that interconnects all Maryland
community colleges and many high schools. The courses are live and interactive,
much like attending a traditional classroom; however, students and faculty
may not be at the same location and may be communicating via video conference. All
classroom and attendance policies apply to interactive video courses. For
