Program Benefits - Making a Difference in Participants’ Lives

Honors Requirements: Making a Difference in Academic Success

Students who satisfy one or more of the following criteria are eligible for admission:

  • A minimum composite SAT score of 1650 with no subtotal below 500.
  • A minimum ACT composite score of 22 with neither math nor verbal score below 22
  • A minimum of a 3.25/85% GPA in academic high school courses
  • A minimum of 3.5 GPA in 12-18 hours of coursework completed at Garrett, including English 101 and Math 105.
  • Submission of a portfolio providing evidence of considerable creative ability in writing, art, music or theatre.

Good Standing Requirements:

  • A minimum grade of “B” in all Honors courses
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3
  • Participation in two activities designated as Honors events per semester
  • Execution the Honors project—and all other Honors coursework—in a satisfactory and timely manner
  • Fulfillment of any other obligations—such as writing essays or attending meetings—that may be assigned by the Honors Coordinator.

Admission to the Honors Program is selective, based on the decision of the Honors Committee and the student’s demonstrated ability to take college-level courses. In support of their application, eligible students should submit transcripts and test scores. Additionally, they should submit an essay and a recommendation from a teacher of an academic course. Students will be interviewed prior to admission to the Program.
