
Financial Aid Programs
The Financial Aid Office encourages all students to complete and submit
a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January
1 as possible. Priority will be given to students who apply for financial
aid by May 31 for the Fall semester. In addition, priority will be
given to students who apply by December 15 for the Spring semester.
Students need to apply for financial aid once a year; therefore, if
a student meets the May 31 deadline he/she has subsequently met the
December 15 deadline.
FEDERAL PELL GRANT (No repayment)
Applicants must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid which is available from Garrett's Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Office will determine the actual amount a student will receive based on the student's eligibility report which the Federal government provides. Awards per academic year range from $200-$3,750.
Requirements:
Establish financial need as determined by the U.S. Department
of Education; be enrolled in a degree or certificate program;
be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States;
maintain satisfactory academic progress;
not be in default or owe a refund on a Federal Grant or Loan.
Students seeking a Pell Grant must submit a FAFSA form to
Garrett College in addition to the parents' and/or the student's
federal tax information, if requested.
FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (SEOG)
(No Repayment)
SEOG is a grant for students with exceptional need; priority is given to students with Federal Pell Grants. Awards available per year range from $100-$400 depending upon need and availability of funds.
Students must submit a FAFSA form to Garrett College.
FEDERAL CAMPUS WORK-STUDY (FCWS)
The FCWS program provides employment for students to help pay for educational expenses. A student must establish financial need and maintain good academic standing in order to hold a work-study job.

EARN AND LEARN
Earn and Learn is a program for out-of-state and out-of-county students to earn money which can be used to offset tuition costs while gaining valuable work experience in campus jobs and with local employers. Earn and Learn is not based on financial need.
Earn and Learn is for students who are assessed regular out-of-state or out-of-county tuition rates; therefore, statewide designated and West Virginia Reciprocity students are ineligible for Earn and Learn.

WILLIAM FORD FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN PROGRAM-SUBSIDIZED STAFFORD
( Need Based)
This program enables students to borrow directly from the Federal government to finance their educational expenses. The maximum loan amount is $2,625 for freshman (0-28 credits) and $3,500 for sophomores (29+ credits). Loan amounts may not exceed financial need as determined by the Student Aid Report less any other financial aid received.
The Federal government does not charge interest on subsidized loans as long as a student is enrolled at least half-time, during the six month grace period, or during deferments.
Students must submit a FAFSA form to Garrett College in addition
to parents' and/or student's federal tax information, if requested.
The Financial Aid Office will provide promissory notes that must be completed by the student to process the loan request. The promissory notes will be mailed to the student after he/she has accepted the student loan on the Financial Aid Award Notification.
All new borrowers of the William Ford Federal Direct Loan Program are required to attend a mandatory entrance counseling session at Garrett College or complete the session on-line at www.ed.gov/DirectLoan/ .

WILLIAM FORD FEDERAL DIRECT LOAN PROGRAM-UNSUBSIDIZED STAFFORD
(Not Need Based)
This program enables students who do not qualify under the Subsidized Stafford Loan Program to borrow directly from the Federal government to finance educational expenses. The maximum loan amount is $2,625 for Freshman (0-28 credits) and $3,500 for Sophomores (29+ credits).
The Federal government will charge interest on unsubsidized loans beginning the day the loan is disbursed until the day the loan is repaid in full. The current interest rate is 7.59% on Federal student loans.
Students must submit a FAFSA form to Garrett College in addition to parents= and/or student's federal tax information, if requested.
The Financial Aid Office will provide promissory notes that must be completed by the student to process the loan request. The promissory notes will be mailed to the student after he/she has accepted the student loan on the Financial Aid Award Notification.

WILLIAM FORD FEDERAL PLUS LOANS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students)
A PLUS loan allows a parent to borrow money from the Federal government to cover additional funds for educational expenses less any other financial aid.
Upon request, a parent will receive a Parent Plus Data Sheet from the Financial Aid Office. The Parent Plus Data Sheet will be submitted to the Loan Origination Center for a credit check. After the credit check has been approved, promissory notes will be mailed to the parent for completion.
Students must submit to Garrett College a Student Aid Report from the Federal Student Aid Program in addition to parents' and/or student's federal tax information, if requested.
MARYLAND STATE FUNDED FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMS
The programs in this section are administered by the Maryland State Scholarship Administration and available only to Maryland residents. To apply for Maryland State Scholarships, students must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1. FAFSA forms are available in the Financial Aid Office. www.mhec.state.md.us
MARYLAND STATE EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE GRANT
The purpose of the Educational Assistance Grant is to provide need-based
scholarship assistance to Maryland residents with low or moderate
incomes. The award ranges from $400-$3,000 a year. A student can renew the
award three times if he/she continues to be eligible. A student must maintain
satisfactory academic progress to maintain eligibility for the
scholarship. DEADLINE-MARCH

GUARANTEED ACCESS GRANT
Guaranteed Access Grants pay most of the college expenses for Maryland students from very low income families. A student must graduate from a Maryland high school with at least a 2.5 grade point average. The maximum award for the grant is $8,700 per year, depending on which college in Maryland a student attends.
In addition to completing the FAFSA form, a student must complete and return a Guaranteed Access Grant application to the State Scholarship Administration by March 1. The student is also responsible for mailing an official high school transcript with the application. DEADLINE-MARCH 1.
SENATORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Awards and amounts are determined by State Senators. The scholarship may range from $200-$2000 a year. The scholarship will be automatically renewed for up to three additional years as long as the student meets the eligibility requirements. DEADLINE-MARCH 1.

DELEGATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Contact your Delegate for further instructions on how to apply. You must reapply each year to your Delegate(s). The award amounts vary with the minimum award being $200 per year.
MARYLAND TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is for graduating high school seniors, undergraduates, and graduate students who would like to become classroom teachers in Maryland public schools.
Students must have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average in high school if applying as a high school senior. College students must have a 3.0 grade point average to apply for the scholarship. Applicants must be full-time students enrolled in an eligible teacher education program.
Students enrolled at a 2-year college are eligible for $1,000 annually. A student must sign a promissory note that states he/she will work as a full-time certified teacher in Maryland, one year for each year of assistance received, or pay back the money with interest.
In addition to completing the FAFSA form, a student must complete a Maryland HOPE Scholarship Programs application and submit it to the State Scholarship Administration by March 1. DEADLINE-MARCH 1.
DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND MENTAL HEALTH WORKFORCE TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
This program helps certain employees or students who agree to work as employees in community-based programs that serve individuals with certain disabilities.
Students enrolled at a 2-year college are eligible for up to $2,000 per year. However, a student must agree to work between 2000-4000 hours in a community-based program that serves individuals with disabilities or pay the scholarship money back with interest.
A student must complete and mail a Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health Workforce Tuition Assistance Program application to the State Scholarship Administration by July 1. DEADLINE-JULY 1.
SHARON CHRISTA McAULIFFE MEMORIAL TEACHER EDUCATION AWARD
This scholarship helps students who would like to teach school in Maryland in a shortage subject area that does not presently have enough teachers. Contact the State Scholarship Administration at 410-974-2971 for more information about the designated fields of critical need.
Last year, the maximum award for full-time students living on campus was $11,000, but the amount will vary depending on the college a student attends.
Applicants must complete and mail a Sharon Christa McAuliffe Teacher Education Award application by the December 31 deadline to the State Scholarship Administration. DEADLINE-DECEMBER 31.
OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Financial Aid Office posts scholarship announcements on the bulletin board across from the Financial Aid Offices. Applications are available upon request, so please ask a staff member for a copy of a scholarship in which you may be interested.
McKAIG SCHOLARSHIP TRUST
Applicants must be a resident of Bedford or Somerset County, PA; Mineral
or Hampshire County, WV; or Allegany or Garrett County, MD;
and have obtained a high school education or equivalency in
any of these counties.
The applicant or his/her immediate family cannot be an Officer or Director of PNC Bank Corporation or any of its affiliates. In addition, the applicant cannot in any way be involved in the selection of scholarship recipients for the Lalitta Nash McKAIG Foundation.
Personal interviews will be conducted in Cumberland, Maryland in July, and notification to award recipients will be mailed in September.
The award amount may vary for recipients of the McKaig Scholarship. Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. DEADLINE-MAY 31.
THE DWIGHT P. JACOBUS SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students pursuing a career in business or education. All recipients must be residents of Maryland or the District of Columbia for at least one year preceding the date of award.
Recipients must be full-time students, demonstrate financial need, and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. DEADLINE-MARCH 15.

GARRETT COUNTY FARM BUREAU
Scholarships of $250 are awarded to students of Garrett College majoring in agriculture or in the field of natural resources.
Applicants must be residents of Garrett County and a Southern
High School, Northern High School, Beall High School, or Westmar
High School graduate;
Applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. The deadline for Fall semester is December 1, and the deadline for Spring semester is June 1.
NRWT SCHOLARSHIP
The Youghiogheny Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU) offers a scholarship for
a Garrett College student enrolled in the Natural Resources and Wildlife
Technology Program. The scholarship recipient will be required to participate
in TU's initiative to restore the brown trout fishery in Muddy Creek.

BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S FOUNDATION OF MARYLAND, INC SCHOLARSHIPS
Applicants for the Business and Professional Women's Foundation of Maryland,
Scholarships must be residents of Maryland, accepted into a
course of study at an accredited Maryland academic institution,
and demonstrate financial need. (Complete a FAFSA form)
BPW/MD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
Candidates must be women age 25 and over and carry a minimum of 6 credits per semester
The scholarship is to fund undergraduate education to upgrade skills for career development (advancement), train for a new career field, or re-enter the job market.
Scholarship amount is $1000. Applications are available at www.fastweb.com

D.A. SMALL SCIENCE AND BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT
Applicants must be women over the age of 21 who have at least a 3.0 GPA.
Recipient must be working on a bachelor's or advanced degree in Math, Computer Sciences, Medical Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or Business.
Candidate must carry a minimum of 6 credits per semester.
