2007 Garrett Baseball Season Preview
McHenry, MD – The Laker baseball team will open up its 2007 campaign with a three-day six-game tournament starting on Feb 23 in Richmond, VA. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Garrett College Baseball and also marks for the first time in his three-year tenure, back-to-back recruiting classes for Head Coach Eric Hallenbeck. The Lakers will try to finish a season over .500 for the first time since 2000 when they finished 25-18 and runner up in the region. With eleven returners from a year ago, eight transfers and a solid freshman class, the 2007 season should be an exciting one for the boys in blue. “We finally have some experience this year. In two years we have had a total of 12 sophomores. This year alone we have 16 with 13 of them getting a lot of playing time a year ago,” said Coach Hallenbeck. “The time is now for us to get this program turned around. We have received a strong and much appreciated commitment from the college by helping us fund a new indoor baseball facility, clubhouse, JV program and additions to the coaching staff. With the recent additions and this being my third season at the helm, we need to start winning more games. I think the players that are in the program now are very capable of doing just that.”

The ’07 Lakers will only go as far as their pitching will take them. Garrett has just two starters from a year ago, but has five newcomers looking to crack the starting rotation. “Pitching will be a question mark due to the lack of experience we have, however, I think we are talented. All of them at times threw the ball well in the fall, so I think once they get some real innings under their belt we will be fine.”

The Lakers will continue to play their aggressive style of baseball, but GC needs the pitching staff to keep games close to allow for that aggressive style. “Overall team speed is the best it’s been during my tenure. I believe we will hit and defensively we are solid. Add to the above great team chemistry and a couple of breaks here and there, we will be in the “thick of things.”

About the Program
One of the best continues to get better. Garrett College and its baseball program offer the following:

  • A Division I program in the NJCAA
  • The seventh smallest school in the nation to compete in NJCAA Division I.
  • Forty players to sign professional contracts in thirty years.
  • Eight NJCAA All Americans.
  • New indoor practice facility and professional-style lockerrooms
  • One of the top amateur fields in Maryland
  • Only the second team in the Maryland JUCO conference and NJCAA Region XX to have lights.
  • Continual contact with four year schools and professional scouts.
  • Despite a very demanding schedule, the team has averaged over twenty wins a year for the past nine years.
  • A choice of 2 co-ed residence halls or off campus housing.
  • Each season the maximum number of games allowed is scheduled.

Garrett College has a four-day class schedule (1½-hr classes two times per week). This allows our players to miss no academic time in the fall, and most games are scheduled Friday, Staurday or Sunday in the spring to allow more class time than most other educational institutions

Garrett is the second junior college in Maryland equipped with lights. During the summer of 1998 a new impressive 10' x 36' electronic scoreboard was also installed.
