Results for
the 2007
NJCAA Division III National Championship
Chautauqua Golf Club - June 4-8, 2007
The NJCAA
D-3 tournament was a four
day event with a 110 golfers participating.
Michael Bergstrom finished 57th and
shot 318 total. Amazingly, the
exact same finish and score as last
year. Travis Friend
finished tied for 74th and shot 324
for the event. Interestingly, Montgomery
Rockville was leading all teams by
the third day, but lost on Friday,
despite shooting some good scores.
“In my opinion, the course played
very tough. Greens were hard
and the fairways were narrow and tree
lined. The 520 yard par 5 actually
had the road run through it at about
300 yards and Michael landed a drive
on the macadam, which added to the
slope, bouncing his ball out of bounds
twice. He ended with a 9 on the hole
and still finished with a 77. To
go 91 and then finish 73 (with a triple
bogie), 77 and 77 shows his mental
toughness. He could have easily
given up.”
Comments Coach Gibson, “You
have to really know golf to appreciate
how tough it is to be one of the top
15 players in the nation. Subtract
Michael’s worst scoring day out
of the equation and give him his regular
season scoring average of 79. 8 and
he is an All American. He shot
78 in the practice round, he just had
one bad day. In golf you do not
have anyone but yourself to depend
on, there are no subs when you are
having an off day."
"Travis
also has the ability to compete at
that level, but again, you have to
put everything together over a 6 hour
round and stay consistent. On
the final day, Travis had at least
a 30 minute wait between most of his
shots over the last 6 holes, which
makes it very hard to establish any
rhythm. It was also a very hot,
humid day on Friday, whereas on Tuesday,
the opening day, it was in the 30’s
with the wind chill.”
“I will really miss both of
these guys, not only because they were
two of the top players to play here,
but because of their consistency and
great attitudes. They did not
make excuses and did not find ways
to get out of playing when the trip
was 4 or 5 hours travel one way. Michael
and Travis were both All Region performers
and I am glad they got the opportunity
to play in this national event, not
many players have that opportunity
in their entire careers.”

Garrett
College Golfers Qualify for NJCAA D-3 National
Tourney
Sophomores Michael Bergstrom
and Travis Friend have both qualified for
the NJCAA Division 3 tournament held in
Chautauqua, NY June 3 – 9. The
Region XX tourney was hosted by Montgomery
Rockville at Little Bennett Golf Course,
Clarksville, MD. Bergstrom’s
two day total was 154, placing him 4 th
overall individually. His 74 on Tuesday
was low round for the day. Friend
shot a two day total of 174 putting him
in 9 th place. Overall, Garrett’s
team placed third in Region XX behind Rockville,
1 st and Anne Arundel, second place. Bergstrom
was also a MD JUCO 1 st team recipient,
his second straight year as well as All
Region.
Coach Gibson “ This was
a very challenging course, one of the
top three our team has played in the
past two years. Going into the
tourney I thought we had a chance to
win the title, but our number 1 golfer,
Matt Skidmore, quit the team for undisclosed
reasons. As it turned out, it
would not have mattered, the Rockville
team was unbelievable and shot a team
total of 199 on the opening day, which
was an average of 75. I am very
proud of not only the success of Travis
and Michael, but the contributions
of Jed Crawford and TJ Nine. Jed
stuck with us all year and worked at
improving his game to try to help us
win.
This
is one of the best years we have experienced
as a golf program and I think both Bergstrom
have a chance to do well in the national
tournament and you have to credit Michael,
Travis and Jed. Bergstrom is returning
to the national tourney, so he has a
good idea of what it takes. He
really played well on Tuesday to prove
his ability. If he chose, I am
sure he could receive a D-1 or
D-2 scholarship, he has all the ability.”
