2009-2010 GAME HIGHLIGHTS
02-15-10
Mens basketball to play at home Tuesday versus Montgomery Rockville. At 6:00 pm.
COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE LAKERS IN THEIR FINAL HOME GAME OF THE SEASON.
The Garrett Lakers have secured a fourth place MD JUCO finish out of seventeen teams. They will host a 1st round home game with Montgomery Rockville on Tuesday, February 16 at 6:00 PM. Garretts regular season meeting with Rockville was cancelled due to weather and this will be the first meeting between the two this season. I have not seen Rockville play this year, but they have beaten some good teams. We seem to match up quite often in the playoffs for some reason and I have always found them to be one of the toughest opponents we face. They play great defense and really push the ball on offense. They are well coached and play very hard, we will have a very tough first round game, noted Coach Gibson.
02-13-10 vs. Cecil
Nationally ranked Cecil made the trip to Garrett despite snow covered roads on Saturday. I give them all the respect, the game meant nothing to them other than a chance to play. They were number one seed in the MD JUCO with or without a loss, expressed coach Gibson. It probably meant more to us from the aspect of measuring ourselves against another top ranked opponent. Garrett built and held a solid lead for 33 minutes of the game, and were leading by eight with seven minutes remaining, but only managed four points over that period until Jordan Gipson drained a three with less than forty seconds to play and Cecil up five. Cecil controlled the free throw line in the last minute and won 83 77. We gave them too many second chances and we did not finish plays and free throws, noted Gibson. We got some shots we normally make, but we turned the ball over and lost our intensity for some reason. We really missed Stem, he was doing a great job moving our offense. Joe Dubuche has done a good job when Jeff was out but Stem playing lets Joe be more of a shooter for us. Garrett finished just 12 of 18 from the line while Cecil hit 26 of 38. Kory Gibson was on fire with four threes in the first half, but only scored one three and a two in the second to lead with 21 points. Jordan Gipson finished with 15 and Mario Lloyde 12. The regular season record is finished at this point with 15 wins and 9 losses. MD JUCO record concludes at 9 5.
02-12-10 vs. Anne Arundel C.C.
Garrett College found a game to play, even if it meant a four hour drive on the road one way. Scheduled to play a makeup game with Harford at Garrett, Harford indicated they would not be coming late Thursday night. Anne Arundel CC, about an hour south of Harford, indicated they could play at Anne Arundel if the Lakers would make the trip. If we can play, we will make every effort to play as long as the players are safe, indicated Coach Gibson. The roads were great. In reality this was not a good move for us, we were solidly in fourth place without any games. A loss here could have dropped us as far as seventh. But we play any game we can per our contracts , seeding is secondary. The Lakers jumped out to a 20 point lead despite playing only one game in two and a half weeks. Anne Arundel battled back to cut the lead to four with just 6 minutes remaining. Kory Gibson nailed a three to push the lead back to seven and Doma Ibrahim came on strong inside hitting a variety of power moves and free throws to hold off Anne Arundel for a 92 84 win. We did not play our best basketball but we did what we had to win this game despite all the foul trouble. I really like the way Doma stepped up late in the game, he was the difference, added coach Gibson. Garrett was 30 of 50 from the foul line while Anne Arundel finished 32 of 41. The Lakers improve to 15 8 and 9 4 in MD JUCO play. Kory Gibson led the scoring with 18 points. Doma Ibrahim added 15 points and 8 rebounds plus three for three from the line in the last minutes.
02-03-10 vs. Frederick C.C.
After nearly a week and a half layoff due to cancellations, the Garrett Lakers struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the opening first half losing at Frederick 74 - 57. Joe Dubuche with 14 points and Kory Gibson's 13 led the Lakers. Jordan Gipson pulled down 6 rebounds but was held to 3 points. Jeff Stem returned to the lineup after missing 5 games to an ankle injury and led with four assists to go along with five points. "It has been a tough week and in fact a tough season for our team this year," noted Laker coach Dennis Gibson; " We were playing well together and then take more than a week off, and all the talk is about our two games this weekend being snowed out already." " I do not think I did a good job of preparing our team for this game, Frederick was much more focused on stopping our outside shooting. We finally got it going with our press in the second half and had a chance to get it to 8 points with four minutes remaining, but we missed two free throws and gave up a three and did not recover again." The Lakers drop to 8 - 4 in the league and 14 - 8 overall. Friday's game with Anne Arundel at 5:00 may be moved to an earlier time and Saturday's game with Rockville is probably going to be moved to Sunday afternoon. TBD.
01-25-10 vs. Potomac State College
The Garrett Lakers won their seventh game in a row defeating Potomac State College in Keyser, WV 79 61. Kory Gibson led the scoring column with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first half, including four three pointers. 67 Sophomore center Doma Ibrahim had his best game of the season with 12 rebounds and 11 points. Chris Hilliard added 11 rebounds and 16 points. The Lakers built leads of as much as 20 points in the first stanza, but the Catamounts fought back in the second half cutting the lead to 11 with under nine minutes to play. Potomac States Tyrone Smith came off the bench hitting back to back threes and a pair of free throws to make the score 59 50, but the Lakers went inside to Ibrahim and he responded with nine of his eleven points in the closing minutes on a variety of power moves and offensive rebounds. They had to come out and put a lot of pressure on our guards with the shooting of Gibson and Jordan Gipson, that allowed us to put the ball into the big guys and they responded very well. Hilliard gave us a lot of energy on the boards and so did Mario Lloyde. It is always a good win at Potomac State and they have some very talented players. I feel fortunate that our team has won as many games as we have, but it seems someone is always stepping up for us, noted head coach Dennis Gibson. The record now stands at 14 7 and 8 3 in the MD JUCO.
01-23-10 vs. CCBC Catonsville
The Garrett College Lakers found a way to win again despite the odds defeating CCBC Catonsville at Garrett 75 73. Down by as much as 20 in the first half, Kory Gibson hit a three at the end of the first stanza to cut the score to 50 34. The Lakers came out of the locker room determined to prove their defense and held the Catonsville Comets to 8 points in 14 minutes, tying the score at 66 66 all. The lead exchanged hands numerous times, but Joe Dubuche fed Chris Hilliard a lob for a 75 73 lead with15 seconds remaining which proved to be the winning bucket. Gibson led the scoring column with 19 points followed by Hilliard with 18 points and a team high 8 rebounds. Joe Dubuche only scored 8 points tonight, but he handled the point for us for the second straight night and did a great job. Catonsville trapped and pressed the entire game and Joe stood up to the pressure. You have to be proud of his effort playing out of position and with little practice at the point. It was a great win for this team, noted Coach Gibson. Howard Ferguson added 13 points, including 6 of 6 at the free throw line. The Laker record improves to 13 7 and 8 3 in MD JUCO play.
01-20-10 vs. Prince Georges Community College
Kory Gibson scored 17 points including a decisive three with less than two minutes on the clock to put the Lakers up by 5 with less than two minutes on the clock leading, the Lakers to a 62 55 win at Prince Georges Community College. Chris Hilliard added 14 and led the Lakers with 7 rebounds on the evening. 66 Mario Lloyde came off the bench in the second half with a strong defensive effort and was instrumental in anchoring the Laker zone defense which forced two shot clock violations in the last two minutes. Lloyde also fed sophomore center Doma Ibrahim with a lob pass for a thunderous dunk and a 57 55 lead with three minute remaining which the Lakers never relinquished. Guards Howard Ferguson and Joe Dubuche handled the point guard duties for the first time this season without the services of starters Shawn Greenfield and Jeff Stem, both out with injuries. It was a great win on the road, noted head coach Dennis Gibson, a game where we could have made excuses and lost, but these guys filled in where they had to and won the game. It was very rewarding as a coach to see their teamwork. Dubuche hit a big three late in the game also, and Howard played point most of the first half when Joe went out with fouls. The Lakers have played a very tough schedule this year, and their lineup has been constantly changed with injury, but they have won their last three games and moved the season record up to 12 -7 and MD JUCO to 7 3.
01-18-10 vs. College of Southern MD
Garrett pulled the season record up to 11 wins against 7 losses as they eked out a 66 64 win against a determined College of Southern MD squad at the Gulch. Kory Gibson led the Laker scoring with 19 points, 6 assists and 2 steals. Chris Hilliard added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Doma Ibrahim and Mario Lloyde each added 5 rebounds. Gibson included 4 threes in his total, plus hit one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining to give the Lakers a two point lead. The Laker defense forced a contested shot by Southern MDs Anthony Gwynn and Ibrahim grabbed the final rebound of the game. The Lakers played their second game without Jordan Gipson, and starting point guard Jeff Stem was injured in the second half. Coach Gibson was happy the team held their composure for the win, This has been a tough year in terms of lineups and injuries, but these guys pulled together and found a way to win. They could have gave up when Southern MD went up by 5 with less than three minutes to go, but they got tough and won under tough conditions. I am very proud of them.
01-16-10 vs. Chesapeake Community College
Playing their 5th game in 10 days, the Lakers used their depth to defeat a solid Chesapeake team, 74 59 at the Gulch. Freshman wing Kory Gibson hit 5 threes and a game high 20 points to lead the Laker attack. 64 freshman forward Chris Hilliard, starting in place of injured Jordan Gipson, helped the Lakers control the boards with 9 caroms and 11 points, most which came from offensive rebounding. 67 freshman Vladimir Vukovic came off the bench giving the Lakers a boost with inside scoring adding a season high 12 points. Freshman guard Joe Dubuche added three threes and a free throw for his total of 10 points.
Up 9 in the second half with 10 minutes to play, Gibson sandwiched two threes around a Dubuche three in three straight possession to put the lead at a comfortable distance. We are a little tired, you can tell that from our poor free throw shooting and just overall lack of injury. I know in the players minds the game did not seem that big, but we need every league win we can get to help us secure a home MD JUCO playoff game. The guys are doing a remarkable job when you consider the loss of Greenfield and the fact the Gipson, our second leading scorer, is out with an ankle injury. Our lineup and how we approach the game in terms of pressing or conserving our guards seems to change with every game.
The Laker record improves to 10 7, 5 3 MD JUCO.
01-13-10 vs. Montgomery Germantown
60 freshman Jeff Stem, starting in place of injured All American Shawn Greenfield, scored 27 points to lead Garrett over Montgomery Germantown, ranked #8 in NJCAA D-3, 100 88. Jordan Gipson added 18 and Doma Ibrahim 12. Chris Hilliard came off the bench grabbing 9 rebounds to help improve the overall record to 9-7 and MD JUCO record 4 2. Coach Gibson felt his team is starting to come together and has a chance to be a contender by playoff time, "We have had a tough season with injuries. Our schedule has been grueling also with road games and top ranked teams. Jordan Gipson was having a great game and went down with an ankle sprain last night so we will have to fill in for him, which is how our season has gone. I am very proud of how we played with intensity and as a team. The potential is definitely there."
01-07-10 vs. CCBC Dundalk
All the excuses for a defeat where present when the Lakers headed to CCBC Dundalk on Thursday.
They were playing after nearly a three week Christmas layoff, it was their seventh consecutive road game, starting forward Chris Hilliard and back up Mario Lloyde were out, not to mention that pre season All American Shawn Greenfield was not fully recovered from injury and not ready to play and the game was rescheduled. True to form, Dundalk hit their first five shots and held a 15 2 lead before Jeff Stem, a 6 freshman guard, drained a three to get the Lakers rolling. 64 freshman wing Kory Gibson drained two more threes and sophomore Howard Ferguson, starting on the opposite wing canned another and the Lakers pulled ahead 17 15. The Lakers continued to roll building a 35 23 half time lead. The Lakers pulled away, building the lead to 22 on the strength of Jordan Gipson, a 64 freshman and Doma Ibrahims inside scoring. Dundalk managed to cut the lead to 12 with three minutes to play, but the Gipson scored five consecutive including two free throws to rebuild the lead and an final 72 53 win. The season record now stands at 8-5 3 1 MD JUCO
12-13-09 vs. Monroe Community College
In desperate need of a win, the Garrett Lakers came out strong against the much bigger and more athletic Monroe, NY team and held their own for much of the game. Tied at 18 with just 5 minutes remaining in the first half, Garrett missed two straight one on one attempts at the free line and an unforced turnover in their next three possessions, which led to 12 unanswered points and an eventual 44 - 28 half time deficit. " They say the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores but we cannot wait till next year. Our young players have to understand the importance of each possession and make sure they stay focused. We do not understand how to stop the other team's offensive runs and free throws are a big part of that," commented Coach Gibson. " We have some good players but I am not sure that they understand that Monroe was 33 - 3 or something like that last year for a reason. We cannot just come out and fire away and hope to win, we have to stick with a game plan. I am sure if Greenfield was shooting those free throws or running the team, we would be more focused, but he was not, so all our players need to fill their roles." Freshman Jordan Gipson was selected to the all tourney team, concluding the night with 9 points and 6 boards. 6'5 freshman Kory Gibson led the scoring with 17 points and Jeff Stem added 13. Joe Dubuche hit 3 threes and a two for his 11 points. Sophomore center Doma Ibrahim finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Laker record falls to 7 - 5 at the conclusion of fall semester and they return to play on Jan. 6 in yet another road game at CCBC Dundalk.
12-12-09 vs. Harcum Community College
Harcum Community College proved its number six national ranking with a 101 - 73 win over the visiting Lakers at the Frederick CC Roy Rogers Classic this past weekend. The Lakers were only down three at half time, but some cold shooting and turnovers which led to a flurry of baskets by Harcum to open the second half pushed that lead to 12 and the Lakers could not recover. Freshmen Jeff Stem and Dominique Goodwin shared point guard duties in place of injured Shawn Greenfield, and did a solid job, scoring 9 and 7 points respectively. Freshman Jordan Gipson did his share to keep the Lakers in the game, scoring 18 points and adding 12 rebounds against the much taller Harcum team. Another freshman, 6'5 guard Kory Gibson added 15. 6'6 forward Mario Lloyde finished with 10. "We handled Harcum's press for the most part, but we made too many mistakes in the half court and would not settle into our offense. That is what pressure does to a team, and our guards need to be more confident with the ball and running our offense. We also need more assists, we are only getting about 7 a game and we need 10 to 12 per night. On the bright side I thought we played with them in stretches and if we played with a better understanding can win games at this level," noted head coach Dennis Gibson. The loss drops the Lakers to 7 - 4 on the season.
12-10-09 vs. Westmoreland Community College
The Garrett Lakers won their second straight road game in a row, defeating Westmoreland Community College 78 - 62, but suffered a huge loss in the win. Preseason All American Shawn Greenfield went down with a knee injury early in the first half and was not able to return to the game. Coach Gibson commented on the win, but was very concerned about the loss of Greenfield; " Shawn is one of the hardest workers, most dedicated kids I have coached. On top of that he is our leader and losing him as a point guard is going to be very tough. On the bright side we were able to pull together in the second half and get a win against a very good three point shooting team on the road. 6' freshman point guard Jeff Stem showed he has the athletic ability to play at a high level, now I hope he can show he has the understanding of the game and lead our team."
Freshman forward Jordan Gipson had an outstanding game, leading the Lakers with 21 points and 8 rebounds. 6'6 freshman forward Mario Lloyde came off the bench and added some scoring punch in the second half with 12 points. The Lakers jumped out to a 15 to 5 lead, but found themselves down at half time, 39 - 24. Freshman Joe Dubuche added 10 points, including 3 three pointers. With the win, the Laker record moves to 7 - 3.
12-02-09 vs. Baltimore City Community College
Garrett College Lakers men's basketball team got back on the winning track, eking out a 69 - 63 win at Baltimore City Community College. Shawn Greenfield led the scoring column with 18 points and 4 assists. 5'10 freshman guard Joe Dubuche added 3 threes and 10 points. 6'5 freshman Kory Gibson came off the bench to score 12 points in his first game after missing the first 8 with an injury. Dominique Goodwin, a 6'3 freshman guard, led in rebounding with 8 and 9 points, 7 of which came in the last quarter of play. Coach Gibson was very happy with the win; " Baltimore is one of the toughest places to play on our schedule. Fortunately, we have won the past two out of three years there, but lost at home to them last year. Doma Ibrahim, (6'7 center) and Mario Lloyd, 6'6 freshman forward, came up with some really big plays in the last two minutes to preserve the win. We held them scoreless the last two minutes. A steal by Ibrahim and two rebounds by Lloyd in Baltimore's last two possessions kept us in the lead. They were really hurting us on the boards until then." The Lakers move to 6 - 3 on the season and 2 - 1 in MD JUCO play.
11-24-09 vs. Allegany College
Garrett showed their inexperience in a 64 51 loss at Allegany College. The Lakers jumped out to a 15 4 lead but the Trojans surged back on hot three point shooting building a 39 24 lead by halftime. The Lakers went from blazing hot to open the game to frozen; not scoring for the final eight minutes of the first half. Garrett pulled it together in the second half and worked steadily at chipping away the lead which they cut to 8 with just three minutes remaining. But some hasty decisions gave Allegany back to back layups, allowing the lead go back up to 12 in 30 seconds of play, and Garrett was forced to foul in order to get the ball. Allegany was only 2 of 6 from the line, but picked up 16 offensive rebounds for the game and were able to control the time and score for most of the late minutes of the game. Shawn Greenfield led the scoring for the Lakers with 13 points and Chris Hilliard added 10. The loss drops the Lakers to 5 3 overall and 1 1 in MD JUCO play.
11-21-09 vs. Butler County C.C.
Garrett met with little resistance at Butler County CC, PA winning 105 - 46. 6'3 freshman guard Dominique Goodwin from Potomac, VA showed why he was a highly recruited high school athlete scoring a career high 21 points; including 3 threes and a pair of dunks. The Lakers as a team concluded the game with 13 three pointers, 4 each from 6'1 point guard Shawn Greenfield and 5'10 shooting guard Joe Dubuche. Head coach Dennis Gibson was pleased with the effort from his team and all players managed to get into the scoring column. " It was nice to get some less used guys some minutes and work on some of our defenses in a game situation. It is tough to play a game like this, but you can never predict the level of your opponent when you schedule. We have had some great games with Butler over the years, we just had too much size and athleticism for them." The win improves the Garrett record to 5 - 2 and 1 - 0 in MD JUCO play.
11-18-09 vs. Howard
Garrett won 80 - 78 at the Gulch to up their season record to 4 - 2. 6'1 Combo guard Shawn Greenfield hit 4 threes, 6 twos and 5 of 7 from the line for a Garrett career high 29 points. His final free throw miss was intentional, negating an inbounds play by Howard CC in the final second of the game. Freshman forward Chris Hilliard, 6' 4, scored 16 points, including two clutch free throws to give the Lakers a tie with just 21 seconds remaining in the game. He added 10 rebounds for his second double double of the season.
"I was extremely disappointed in our effort in our last game, maybe not just our effort, but our basketball IQ. We did not understand how to protect our lead late in the game. This time, we had to come back down 5 with three minutes remaining and Greenfield was the deciding factor in that. But some other guys stepped up as well. 6'3 Dominique Goodwin a freshman guard, and 6' Jeff Stem had their best games last night. We are the typical young team trying to figure out what works best for us. Howard may be the best team we have played so far, so it was great to see how we responded after that loss," added Coach Gibson.
11-15-09 vs. Potomac State (Railey Realty Hoopfest)
Garrett blew a six point lead with 4 minutes to play losing at home to Potomac State 79- - 75 in the Railey Realty Hoopfest. Freshman 5'11 guard Joe Dubuche scored 15 and freshman 6'4 forward added 14. 6'1 sophomore point guard scored in double figures with 12 but only added 3 assists. Coach Dennis Gibson hoped the game taught the Lakers a valuable lesson; " Your team has to find a way to win and players have to understand the clock. We did not and Potomac State did. They used their zone to limit our rebounding and we fouled them foolishly late in the game." Potomac State hit 40 - 49 free throws while the Lakers went 19 - 29 from the line. " I give Shawn White and his team all the credit, they did not give up." The loss drops the Lakers to 3 - 2. More importantly the game was a Region XX D - 1 game, which leaves the Lakers at 0 - 1 in the Region standings.
11-14-09 vs. Mercyhurst Northeast (Railey Realty Hoopfest)
Garrett upped the team overall record to 3 - 1 defeating Mercyhurst NE 75 - 63 in the opening game of the Railey Realty Hoopfest. 6'1 sophomore guard Shawn Greenfield led all scorers with 17 points and added 5 assists. 6'4 freshman forward Chris Hilliard scored a career high 16 points and 10 rebounds. 6'7 sophomore center Doma Ibrahim added 9 rebounds to go along with his 6 points as the Lakers handled the much smaller Saints under the basket.
11-11-09 vs. West Virginia Wesleyan
Garrett moved their record to 2 - 1 defeating WV Wesleyan JV 90 - 77 last night in Buckhannon, WV. 6'5 Freshman forward Mario Lloyde came off the bench to spark the sluggish Lakers with 13 second half points and a total of 17. Sophomore pre season All American Shawn Greenfield, 6'1 point guard, continued his consistent play with 20 points and 5 assists. Sophomore post, 6'7 Doma Ibrahim scored 11 points and led with 3 blocks and 7 rebounds.
Coach Dennis Gibson was not pleased with his team's overall effort, " We need to play better defense, that is something we have always done well here. This team has not learned to play together and be focused. Our turnovers lead to us being on the defensive end way too much. Right now, Greenfield is our only sure thing in terms of what he brings every night. We just need to keep these young guys on track and work through this."
11-08-09 vs. North Carolina Prep
Garrett won 100 88 over North Carolina Prep this past weekend. 6 4 freshman forward Jordan Gipson scored 20 points and sophomore Shawn Greenfield, 61 combo guard, added 17 and 7 assists. Doma Ibrahim and Chris Hilliard collected 7 rebounds each. The win evens Garretts record at 1 1.
