selected to the Region XX Division 1 All tournament team.
A 6’0 freshman, Greenfield led the third seeded
Lakers to a 75 – 71 win in the opening round game of
the Region XX tourney against host and number two seed, Hagerstown
CC. Greenfield led the Lakers scoring with 24 points,
3 assists and 4 rebounds. He added 13 points and three
steals in the loss to top seed Chesapeake CC in the championship
game. Laker coach Dennis Gibson agreed with the selection; “Shawn
did a great job for us this weekend. He played as he
usually does in the game against Hagerstown, he steps up to
the pressure of big games. In our game with Chesapeake
in the championship, he was the one that finally got us going
offensively. We did not play well as a team, but he tried
to pick us up and get us going offensively.”
Posted 3/19/08 Two Lakers
honored with Region XX Division 1 honors:
Shawn Greenfield received high recognition from the
Region XX Division 1 coaches as he was voted to the 1st team
Region XX. Greenfield led the Lakers in scoring this
season with a 15 ppg average. Glen Izevbigie, 6’9
sophomore center, was selected to the second team. Coach
Dennis Gibson felt both players very deserving;” I could
not agree with these selections more. Shawn has been
our offensive catalyst all season and was definitely one of
the top guards in our league. I am also appreciative
that the coaches recognized Glen, he has done a great job for
us. A center is often like an offensive lineman in football,
they do a lot of the dirty work and get little recognition,
but Glen was very important to us throughout the season. He
is a great team guy and too unselfish. The best thing
is, both of these guys epitomize what JUCO is all about. They
do things the right way.”

Sophomore Dale
Taylor has been
selected to the MD JUCO second team by the league coaches. Taylor averaged 12 ppg and
3 rbpg this season, but is best know for his long range three
point shooting ability and athletic forays to the basket. Dale
connected on 38% of his shots from outside the arc, finishing
with 58 on the season. Coach Gibson was pleased that
Dale’s efforts had been recognized, “Dale is a
gifted athlete and our fans loved to see his highlight dunks. It
is a high honor to be voted to the MD JUCO team by the MD JUCO
coaches, I felt that this may have been one of the deepest
levels of talent I have ever seen in the MD JUCO.”

LAKERS TO SALUTE FORMER COACH DAVE MARTIN
(McHenry) – The Garrett College Lakers will salute their
long time assistant coach Dave Martin prior to their game with
Howard Community College on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 7:00
PM.
Martin passed away on June 22, 2007, after a long battle with
cancer. He had been involved with the Garrett program as a
player in the early 1970s, then rejoined the team as an assistant
coach in 1986.
“For the members of our team over the last twenty plus
years, Dave was a great mentor who exhibited commitment and
loyalty,” said head coach Dennis Gibson. “Those
qualities are the basis of great teams and successful lives.
“Our community knows that Dave was a great friend, a
man of faith and an outstanding public servant. We were fortunate
to have him in our program, and he left such a positive impression.
It would be wrong to let that influence end with his passing.”
All friends and fans are invited to attend the game. There
will be no admission charged, but there will be a box at the
entrance to the gymnasium for those who wish to donate to the
David K. Martin Scholarship Fund, with the first recipient
being Dave's son, Ryan.
There will be a brief presentation and dedication prior to
the Star Spangled Banner, which will feature a recording of
Martin performing with the Broadford Quartet.
Brenda's Body Shop will be performing at halftime.
“This is a celebration of what Dave Martin meant to
us,” said Gibson. “He certainly wouldn't want it
to be a sad occasion, so with that in mind, we're hoping to
have a lot of smiles and fond memories.”

Conway commits to Fairmont State, WV
Daniel
Conway, 6’5 sophomore guard, has committed to
continue his basketball career with D-2 power Fairmont State
University, Fairmont, WV. Conway played one year at
Garrett and will have two years of eligibility remaining to
play for the Falcons. Garrett College coach Dennis Gibson
is happy with his choice, “Daniel is a good fit for
Fairmont. He brings a lot of athleticism and versatility
to the lineup. For the most part of the year he was our
leading scorer, and I am sure he will be successful in the
WVIAC. I know the coaches there well and Daniel will
fit right into their style of play.” Conway will
have the opportunity to play against former Lakers now in the
WVIAC including Jerome Jack, Davis & Elkins, Hrvoje Muhek,
Ohio Valley College, and Barry Cornish at Shepherd University. “The
WVIAC is one of the top rated Division ll conferences in the
country, so I am sure this is a good fit for our players. We
are very comparable to that level of play as far as the MD
JUCO is concerned so the adjustment is not that difficult. It
is really great that so many former Lakers have received scholarships
and will be able to compete against each other”, added
coach Gibson.
