Columbia

Badly needing a win against 10 -1 Howard CC, a national tournament team last year, Garrett won a fiercely contested double overtime game 91 - 86.  Game time was moved up 5 hours and with little rest the team responded by winning the battle of the free throw line hitting 33 of 44 free throws and sealing the win in the paint.  6'6 forward Frank Holloway finished with 27 points, 7 of 8 from the line and 4 of 8 from three point range.  Point guard Corey Groom knocked down 14 of 18 free throws for a total of 18 points and 4 assists.  Deandre Davis added 17 points and 10 boards.  Lakers head into a three week Christmas break 8 -3.

LaPlata

Garrett opened a 17 point lead in the first half which they saw dwindle and disappear in the last minutes of the game eventually losing to MD JUCO leader College of Southern MD 83 -81. The season record now stands at7 - 3.

Montgomery

Garrett won a hard fought contest at the CARC Fieldhouse over the visiting  Montgomery Raptors 73 – 59.  6’6 Soph center Frank Holloway, coming off the bench, scored 20 points and hit some big shots in the paint in the second half to hold off a rally by the Raptors after cutting the Laker lead to 9.  5’10 freshman point guard Corey Groom hit 9 of 11 free throws in the second half, finishing with 16 points, 9 rebounds and three assists. 

“Corey led us in rebounding on hustle and toughness.” Noted coach Gibson, “the rest of our team should take note.  But if we do not finish our plays and continue to be a poor free throw shooting team, we will struggle in D-2, especially on the road” .  “ Our bench has been key for us, and even though we do not get scoring sometimes, we do get great hustle and team play when we put our back up guys in, and we have always worked to develop that aspect.”  Garrett’s record improve to 8 – 2 on the season as finals week takes precedence over practice and games.  The Lakers will head to CSMD and Howard, two top D-2 opponents Friday and Saturday.

Westmoreland CC

Lakers won on the road at Westmoreland CC in a physical environment 56 – 44.  Poor shooting from the field and free throw line combined for the lowest scoring output of the season. 

6’6 Sophomore Frank Holloway, power forward, came away with 13 points and 8 rebounds. 6’4 Soph wing DJ Ritchie and  6’ freshman point guard Corey Groom added 10 each.  Ritchie recorded 4 steals and Groom led with 5 assists.

Butler County CC

The Lakers won easily on the road at Butler County CC, PA last night 96 – 58 to up the record to 4 – 1. 6’6 frosh DeAndre Davis recorded his first double double of his career with 15 points and 10 boards.

Frank Holloway, 6’6 soph, led all scorers with 23 points. 6’ freshman guard Chris Scarlett recorded 5 assists. 6’4 soph guard DJ Ritchie netted 13 points, four for four from three point range. 6’8 soph, Shannon McCready added 8 points to go with 4 assists.

Hagerstown CC

The Garrett Lakers won in overtime 94 – 86 at home stopping an athletic Hagerstown team and upping the season record to 6 – 2.  The team showed great heart, keeping their composure after losing a 5 point lead with  90 seconds remaining in regulation.  6’6 Sophomore power forward Frank Holloway scored 26 to pace the Lakers and 6’4  sophomore guard DJ Ritchie added 17, 5 caroms and three steals.    In his second start of the year,  6’6 forward De Andre Davis, freshman,  come up with a double double; 13 boards and 13 points.   5’10 frosh point guard Corey Groom scored 11 adding 7 assists and 3 steals.  6’1 freshman guard Tavares Martin came off the bench and scored 5 points in overtime, including a huge three with three and a half minutes remaining to give the Lakers a one point lead and swinging momentum to the Lakers …. “this is the type of win we needed against a top notch team. Hagerstown, D-1,  has already played some of the top teams in the country close on the road and our guys wanted to prove they can win in the MD JUCO, noted Coach Gibson. Our bench was great tonight and most of our starters played as they should.  I am proud of the entire team”
