Lakers Open Season at 2-0

Pictured Above returning sophomores (L-R): Drazen Frankovitch, Chris Scarlett, DeAndre Davis

The 2014-15 Lakers opened the season with two solid wins in the inaugural David K. Martin Legacy Classic. Garrett fans will remember Dave Martin not only as a men’s basketball assistant, but also as a graduate and supporter of Garrett College. He was a deeply religious man and an elected county official for over 20 years. His legacy will go on at Garrett College with this tournament. All funds donated will go to support Garrett College athletic teams. Coach Dennis Gibson, entering his 30th season as head coach, was a lifelong friend of Dave’s and put this tournament together in his honor. “Dave volunteered his time not only here, but everywhere; singing at churches and weddings, and working with different organizations and events. Most of all he will be remembered for his wit and fun attitude, and his willingness to be a friend to all of our players. He helped many in times of need, especially those guys that came from tough family backgrounds and just needed to learn how to adapt and grow. We will never forget him as a part of our Garrett family”.

After a home game with Westmoreland on Nov. 12, the Lakers will host the annual McDonald’s Big Mac Classic Tournament Nov. 14- 15. The field for the Classic Tourney will include Brookdale CC, whom the Lakers will face on Friday evening at 7 PM. The Lady Lakers, 3-2, will face Brookdale at 5 PM. Brookdale Jersey Blues men’s basketball team won the NJCAA Dlll National Championship just two years ago and are one of the top teams the Lakers will face this season. They are currently ranked #3 in the nation and their roster is anchored by 6’9 Norbert Allen and 6’8 Brian Crosby. Remaining teams are Allegany College of Maryland, and Butler County CC from the WPCC.

The squad itself is anchored by three returning sophomores; Chris Scarlett, DeAndre Davis and Drazen Frankovitch. Davis played heavy minutes last season and is one of the leading returnees in Region XX if not the nation. Putting an exclamation on his status was a 21 rebound, 27 point effort in the season opening 104- 68 win versus WVU Parkersburg. A slimmed down and much quicker 6’6 Frankovitch added 15 points with some of those coming in the lane on impressive dunks. Scarlett played much of last season with an injured shooting wrist, and will be asked to stretch defenses from three point range. Chris plays point guard and is one of the team’s leaders on defense.   He had 10 points and a team high 7 assists versus Parkersburg. All three will captain this year’s team.

As with most JUCO teams the freshmen will have a huge impact. 6’0” freshman point guard Rze Culbreath will be one of those players. He was a league leading scorer in high school and was offered D2 scholarships, choosing Garrett to increase his level of opportunity. In the opener he added 10 points but his toughness attributed for 6 rebounds, a steal and 3 assists.  Wing play will be much deeper and overall quicker than last year’s National tournament edition.   Nemo Trexler, Sebastien Jean-Charles and Lekan Ojo can all play the wing and small forward positions and will be very tough match ups for opposing teams. RS sophomore Chris Hill can also add to the mix as an all-around player.

The post is not as deep as previous teams, and the wings will have to mix it up inside at 6’3 and 6’4 with bigger or taller posts. 6’4” freshman Marcus Berry is a project, but has a great attitude and is a lefty that can score some points. He will have to learn to defend and take care of the ball in crucial situations. Three local products have been invited to the team; Kyle Sherbin, from Northern Garrett, Matt Friend and Lucas Ritchie, from Southern Garrett, With Ritchie being the most productive, as a scorer at Southern . He can step out and hit open threes and has enough size to defend JUCO quickness.

"Our goal is always to be representing our school in the national tournament. Every team has those aspirations but I believe we have a legitimate chance again this season. We need to fill some positions, but our returnees are tough, hard playing individuals who are also going to be grads of this school, and I am confident they can lead us. As always, it will be how our freshmen progress, lack of injury, etc. In our case it will not be academics which is a blessing and an opportunity to constantly improve. We are a team of March.” Coach Gibson
