About the Staff

Thea Garland-Head Coach
Thea Garland

Thea Garland began her coaching career at Garrett College as an Assistant Coach for the Lady Lakers in their 2003 season.  Prior to coming to Garrett, she held a similar position for the Men’s team at Potomac State College in Keyser, West Virginia.  After taking the Head Coach position at Garrett, she has brought a number of recruits & talent into our area and successfully built an organization that has brought championship honors home annually to McHenry, Maryland.  One year winning the Region XX tournament and MD JUCO tourney in the same year.  The results of her and her team’s efforts can be seen by the new banners in the gymnasium representing each year of her presence at the college as Head Coach.

Recently, the Lady Lakers were crowned as the Maryland JUCO Champions for the 2007 season and were runner’s up in the Region XX.  As a result, yet another banner & trophy award will be added to the collection on campus, continuing her success and gaining support and recognition to Garrett College athletics’ programs and attention to the associated Maryland community.

Notably, Coach Garland personally received her second award as MD JUCO Coach of the Year.  She was also nominated as President for the upcoming year of the MD JUCO’s Coaching Association reflecting her success, leadership efforts and accomplishments for women’s basketball in this area by her peers.

Coach Garland graduated from Keyser High School in Keyser, West Virginia where she was recognized as a standout athlete in a number of sports; especially women’s basketball and softball on the local, county, state and national levels, including too many MVPs, honors and awards to list.  Her abilities caught the attention of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia where she continued to play and receive honors each season of her academic career until graduation.  Examples include, a nomination for Kodak All-American, and she holds two Golden Glove awards in softball.  She graduated from Marshall University with a double major in 1985 with Bachelor of Science Degrees in both Physical Education and Health.

Since then, Coach Garland was employed at Westvaco Corporation in Luke, Maryland, which was recently purchased by NewPage.  Over the past years, she has been very active in her community where she either participated and/or coached a number of league sports including basketball and softball (men’s, women’s, children and church, etc.)  Coach Garland loves the game as exhibited by her personal contributions and lifetime career supporting athletics.  As witnessed by her players, she sets high standards and is dedicated to seeing her players grow and evolve both on and off the court.
