Lakers Allow Battlers to Stick Around

Rodrina Thorpe-Sheppard scored 22 points as Garrett held on to defeat the Alderson Broaddus junior varsity squad 63-58 at Garrett College on Monday December 3rd.

Garrett dominated the first half, leading 34-16 at the break, but Alderson Broaddus was a different team in the second half, outscoring Garrett 42-29 and nearly came back to win on the road.

For the Lakers, Shameena Johnson scored 15, Janice Bartley had 10 and Kailyn Woods chipped in nine. Terra Mckenzie also added 5 and Hannah Hill with 2.

Lady Lakers Lose by Narrow Margin

The Garrett College Women’s basketball team took on Columbus State CC (OH) and lost 57-48. The Lady Lakers trailed 21-28 at half and came out and took the lead 40-39 with 7:28 remaining in the 2nd half but troubled by turnovers and poor free throw shooting just couldn’t hold on. Garrett was lead in scoring by freshman Rodrina Thorpe-Sheppard with 18 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals. Shameena Johnson added 12 points and 8 rebounds while Terra McKenzie pulled down 9 boards & added 4 points for the Lakers. Janice Bartley scored 8 points and Victoria Bonette had 2.

Women Remain Unbeaten

The women’s basketball earned a win this week at home, up by three at the half 38-35, Westmoreland came out took the lead in the second half; only to watch it disappear in the final 3:30 of the game as Garrett defeated Westmoreland CCC 65-58. Terra McKenzie led all GC scorers with 20 points while Rodrina Thorpe-Sheppard put 19 points of her own. The Lady Lakers improved to 3-0 on the season as they received solid scoring efforts from Shameena Johnson with 9, Janice Bartley 6, Kailyn Woods 4, Essence Brown 3, and Hannah Hill and Victoria Bonette both with 2.

Lady Lakers Pound the Pioneers

Saturday, November 10th the Garrett College Women’s Basketball team faced Butler County Community College (PA) in the Railey Realty Hoopfest. The Lady Lakers had 5 players score in double figures, 2 putting up double-doubles. Leading all scorers was Rodrina Thorpe-Sheppard with 27 points and 10 assists along with 5 rebounds and 6 steals. Terra McKenzie led all rebounders with 20 points and 22 rebounds along with 2 steals and 4 assists. Janice Bartley contributed 21 points and 6 assists as well as 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Shameena Johnson scored 11, Victoria Bonette 10, Hannah Hill and Kailyn Woods both scored 6.

Lady Lakers Win Home Opener

Friday, November 9th the Garrett College Lady Lakers played their 1st game in history their brand new gymnasium and came out recording a 61-44 point win over Potomac State. Garrett was led by freshman Rodrina Thorpe-Sheppard recording a double-double with 15 points & 10 rebounds as well as 5 steals and 3 assists. Sophomore transfer Shameena Johnson also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore transfer Janice Bartley also added 14 points, 4 steals and 5 assists. Returner Terra Mckenzie also had 8, Kailyn Woods with 5, Hannah Hill with 4, and Victoria Bonette with 3.
