Workforce Investment Act
Certain non-credit Continuing Education courses

The Continuing Education & Workforce Development Division
of Garrett College is pleased to offer two courses in conjunction
with Garrett County Economic Development (GCED). GCED
currently funds a small business counselor, Beverley Williams,
who works with Garrett County entrepreneurs at no cost. In
addition, Beverley, along with fellow small business consultant
Sarah Wilt, instructs the following courses which are being
subsidized by GCED:
How to Start a Small Business
Thinking about starting a small business? Not
sure where to begin? Join us for a free session to help you determine
if entrepreneurship is right for you. The facilitator for this session
is an established business owner and small business counselor who is experienced
in the start-up and operation of successful businesses. Topics include:
characteristics of a successful entrepreneur, the importance of a business
plan, financing options, local resources and more. Each participant will
receive a copy of the Starting and Operating a Business in Garrett County,
MD “resource guide.

6 Steps to a Successful Business
Session 1: How to Write a Plan for Your
Business- whether you are looking for financing or deciding
the path your business should take, a business plan is key. Participants
will explore and develop the key elements of their plan during
this session.
Session 2: Financing Your Business, Start
up or Expansion: How do you predict how much money you need
for your business? Where to find it? How to get
it? This session examines available capital from traditional
resources as well as your own assets.
Session 3: Targeting Your Market. Understanding
who your ideal client is and where to find them is a necessary
step before developing your marketing plan and budget. Learn
effective strategies for pinpointing the best clients for
your business.
Session 4: Marketing and Advertising Basics. Learn
how to advertise in the right place, at the right time, to
the right market with a limited marketing budget.
Session 5: Bookkeeping and Income Tax Basics
for Small Business Owners. Learn simple, effective
ways to set up a bookkeeping system organize your records
and use them to complete your tax obligation forms.
Session 6: Positioning Your Business for
Growth. Growth is the key to longevity and prosperity. Discover
the steps that you must take to successfully grow your business. This

How to Excel at Managing & Supervising People
This SkillPath seminar is coming to Garrett
County!

Essential General Records for Small Business
This is a crash course in bookkeeping for the
small business. Students will be introduced to the general records that
are used to track the daily transactions of a business; including revenue and
expense journal, inventory records; accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Students
will also be introduced to single and double entry accounting and developing
a chart of accounts. Additional topics include: general
journal; revenue and expense journal; petty cash records;
fixed assets log; payroll records; independent contractors;
and much more.

Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers 
This SkillPath seminar is coming to Garrett
County! Course Description: Gain the finance and accounting savvy
you need to plan budgets, justify requests and spot problems
before they get out of hand. In just two days of intensive
training, you’ll learn the practical financial skills

QuickBooks Beginner Level
The class will provide an introduction to the
computer program for participants with little or no experience in using the
program. Topics to be covered include creating a new
QuickBooks company, modifying the preset chart of accounts,
adding information to company lists, opening and using registers
for any QuickBooks balance sheet accounts, and reconciling
a QuickBooks checking account.

QuickBooks Intermediate Level
This class is designed for the individual with
moderate experience using the program. Course topics will include tracking
credit card transactions, invoicing customers, creating sales orders, generating
customer statements, receiving payment from customers and making bank deposits. It
will also include writing QuickBooks checks and assigning
amounts to specific expense accounts, working with asset
and liability accounts in QuickBooks, entering bills into
QuickBooks accounts payable, and paying bills.

QuickBooks
Advanced Level
This advanced course is designed for the experienced
QuickBooks user and will address the more advanced features of the program. The
topics will include creating and customizing reports and graphs, exporting
QuickBooks to Microsoft excel, setting up inventory and building finished goods
with QuickBooks, tracking and paying sales tax, understanding QuickBooks payroll
features creating estimates and doing progress invoicing, tracking time and
paying non-employees for time worked, customizing QuickBooks sales forms, and
writing letters in Microsoft Word using QuickBooks.

Construction Math 
This course is for those who may need to brush up on math
skills, especially basic geometry, fractions, area, volume
and conversions. Topics to be covered include: whole
numbers and fractions/decimals (for measurement and payment);
mixed operation fractions and decimals; formula evaluation
techniques of algebra; ratio and proportion; percentage;
hints for problem solving; useful formulas; square and
square root conversions.
