Garrett County Success for Youth (GCSFY)

            Life doesn't have to end when you drop out of school, it can begin. We can help you turn your plans for the future into reality! Garrett County Success for Youth (GCSFY) offers:

             . FREE training to individuals ages 16-21 who wish to improve their basic skills or wish to obtain a State of Maryland High School Diploma (GED)

             . Daily classes held at the Western Maryland Consortium (WMC) with a flexible schedule based on your needs

 We Provide:

  • Classes that are part-time and scheduled for your convenience
  • A GED program where you will receive individualized instruction to prepare you for the test
  • Work readiness skills
  • Job and career counseling
  • Assistance to transition into vocational/technical training or college
  • Work experience for those who qualify
  • Incentives based on performance

 Our Program is different from high school:

  • It only requires a part-time commitment
  • We offer individual and small group training
  • We have computerized, self-paced instruction
  • We offer a progressive learning environment
  • All work is completed during classroom hours

Adult Basic Education: Intake/Assessment
            Participation in Garrett‘s Adult Basic Education program requires that you first go through the Intake/Assessment process.

Note: Assessment/placement intake for Spring classes has been scheduled for four days, January 4, 5, 6 and 7, day or evening. Call 301-334-3804 for an appointment.
Students who wish to enroll in ABE/GED classes will also receive class information.

            If you were unable to complete high school or if you know an adult who struggles with reading, or may be in need of literacy services, this program can help. You may walk-in, meet the staff, bring your questions and find out just how this program can help you.
There is No Cost for the Assessment or Information.

Adult Basic Education
            Adults who would like to increase their present level of education should call or walk in to any of the classes listed below.

These classes are designed to meet individual goals:
* Improve basic reading and math skills and advance to GED education levels
* Prepare to take the MD High School (GED) Diploma exam
* Prepare for College entrance

These classes are free of charge to persons 16 or older and will be on-going through May 2010.

Please note: All potential students who have RECENTLY withdrawn from high school must bring a copy of their withdrawal letter that includes their withdrawal date before they can start class.

The Maryland High School Diploma exam has been scheduled to be offered at Garrett College twice this year.  All applicants must pass an official practice test and have a Maryland picture ID to submit with the application.  Applicants must also be withdrawn from the public school system for three months before the test date.

Thursday, March 4, 2010 - 4:00-9:00pm
& Saturday, March 6, 2010 - 8:00am-2:00pm
Applicants must attend both sessions of the test
Deadline for applications is February 5, 2010
Cost of the exam is $45

Thursday, June 3, 2010 - 4:00-9:00pm
& Saturday, June 5, 2010 - 8:00am-2:00pm
Applicants must attend both sessions of the test
Deadline for applications is May 6, 2010
