Heartsaver First Aid with CPR
The course is an American Heart Association
video-based first aid and CPR course which includes peer and manikin practice
and case discussions. Although the course can be used in any setting,
the course is designed for emergencies in the workplace. Upon successful
completion of the course a two-year First Aid/CPR card will be issued from
the American Heart Association.
These courses are also available to businesses
for groups of six or more on a contractual basis. Contact

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
State of Maryland regulations require that anyone
who performs nursing tasks, delegated by a nurse for compensation, must complete
an approved Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course of study and be certified
by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Those individuals who work in long-term
care facilities (nursing homes) must, after completing the CNA course, successfully
challenge the Maryland NNAAP registry test (written and skills) to be certified
as a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA).
Students interested in registering for this
class must be 16 years of age before the first date of the required clinical. Prior
to registering, potential students are tested for Math and language skills
and are expected to score at the 9th grade skill level to enter the CNA course. Testing
is on Thursdays at 1:00pm by appointment. Call Tom Kierstead at 301-387-

Certified Nursing Assistant: Theory
Topics for the course include the role and responsibilities
of nursing assistants, major organs and body systems, common medical terms
and abbreviations, ambulating devices, human growth and development, ethical
and legal issues, and demonstration of various nursing assistant functions. Students
must complete the Theory portion of the course with a minimum of 80% in order
to continue into the Clinical portion.
Fees include CNA license fee for FIRST-TIME students/licensees
only.
All potential students must register in person after literacy testing
noted above at the Continuing Education & Workforce Development Office
in McHenry.

Students who enroll in Certified Nursing
Assistant: Theory MUST ALSO enroll in Certified Nursing
Assistant:Clinical.
Certified Nursing Assistant: Clinical
This course includes the 40-hour clinical component
of the CNA course and an eight-hour skills practice and final skills examination. Students
must first successfully complete the CNA: Theory course before attending this
course. Both courses must be successfully completed to apply for the
Maryland CNA license. During the supervised Clinical portion of the course,
students will provide demonstrations of learned skills with nursing home residents
for evaluation against accepted standards. 100% attendance is required
and students must be evaluated as satisfactory in all areas and demonstrate
satisfactory skills during the skills final examination in order to successfully
complete. Students who do not complete must re-take both the theory and
clinical components. Students will be assigned to a CNA: Clinical section
by the instructors if two or more sections are offered. Students
must be registered for Certified Nursing Assistant: Theory in order to register
for this course.
