Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy
      Students who enroll in this series of non-credit courses will have the opportunity to explore the field of massage in this required, pre-license course of study.  Upon completion of the course students may begin the process to obtain a Maryland CMT or RMP license.  Students from other states should contact the program director prior to applying for enrollment.  Those  enrolling should plan to commit to approximately 609 hours of instruction over a period of eighteen months.  Students will develop their knowledge and skills of body systems and massage modalities, gain valuable personal skills useful in a client-centered environment, and explore business practices and ethics.

Students who wish to enroll in massage-related courses must submit an application and be accepted to the curriculum before enrollment.  Certain minimum prerequisites, outlined in the application materials, are required for admission.  Core groups start each August.

Most classes in the message Therapy curriculum include movement and massage-related activities.  Please come prepared with sheets, towels and cream.  Be sure to wear clothing appropriate for movement and activity.


 Massage Therapy:  Anatomy & Physiology II
      This course will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, and extremities.  Emphasis will be on muscle location, attachments, and function and on identification of bones and bony landmarks.  Students will demonstrate mastery of the material through verbal description, identification of drawings, and palpation on human subjects.  Admission is open to students who have completed Anatomy and Physiology I .  Core 13 - REQUIRED - 43 fifty-minute hours.

 Practicum II: Therapeutic Modalities of Massage Therapy
      This course will focus on application of the strokes of deep tissue massage - glides, friction, compression, skin rolling, cross-fiber - to the musculature of the shoulder and pelvic
girdles and extremities.  Admission is open to students who have completed Anatomy and Physiology I and Practicum I.  Students must also enroll in Anatomy & Physiology II. 
Core 13 - REQUIRED - 50 fifty-minute hours.

Comfort Zone
Although every effort is made to have a comfortable temperature in the classroom, everyone’s comfort zone is different.  Please bring a jacket or sweater in case the room is too cool for your comfort.


Posture and Stance for Injury Prevention II
      This course will focus on appropriate use of the practitioner’s body in deep tissue massage practice, with attention to stance, movement and breath.  The student will learn how to create depth in the work using the full body.  Instruction will be provided to assist clients on/off the table.  This course is open to students who have completed the Posture and Stance for Injury Prevention I course  Core 13- REQUIRED - 7 fifty-minute hours.

The Synovial Joint
      Students in this course will review types of body joints including the description of joints, their anatomy and mechanics, pathology, scope of practice, and include clinical observation with manual possibilities for treatment.  Participants should bring shorts or bathing suits, and loose shirts for hands-on activities.  This course is required of Core students and open to related health professionals.  Core 13  - REQUIRED - 7 fifty-minute hours.

Pathology II:  Indications and Contraindications  for Deep Tissue Massage
      This seminar is designed to introduce practitioners to the conditions and diseases which indicate or contraindicate the use of Deep Tissue massage techniques.  Participants will review the effects of Deep Tissue massage strokes and discuss their impact on pathology presented by the client.  Core 13 - REQUIRED - 7 fifty-minute hours.

Massage Therapy: Touch and Development
      This course will introduce and explore the concepts of human development through the "whole being" perspective as it relates to touch. This course will focus on touch and development through the exploration of learning theory, developmental stages, and the effects of trauma on touch. Each class will include a hands-on experience of that day’s content.   Core 13 - REQUIRED - 14 fifty-minute hours.

Introduction to Modalities
      This course is designed to introduce students to a variety of massage therapy modalities.  Both Eastern and Western modalities will be explored.  The students will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with modalities that they may wish to pursue in depth at a later date, and to gain information that may be useful when students challenge the National Certification Examination.  Core 13 - REQUIRED - 14 fifty-minute hours.

Massage Therapy:  Anatomy and Physiology III
      This course will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the trunk - the muscular and skeletal structures of the spine and rib cage; and the respiratory, digestive, and circulatory systems.  Admission is open to students who have completed Anatomy and Physiology II.  Core 13  - REQUIRED - 36 fifty-minute hours.

Emotional Processing: Assisting Clients
      This course is designed for the individual who is pursuing knowledge and skills to become certified as a massage therapist.  Upon completion of the course the student will have completed a review of techniques designed to assist clients engaged in emotional processing.  Topics to be covered include anatomy and physiology, coping, closure, boundaries, and referral.  Core 13  - REQUIRED - 14 fifty-minute hours.

Massage Therapy: The Reproductive System & Sexual Issues
      This course will include anatomy and physiology of the reproductive systems, pregnancy, massage for the pregnant woman, bodywork for clients who have experienced sexual trauma, and professional ethics issues.  Core 13 - REQUIRED - 14 fifty-minute hours.

Reiki II
      Reiki II deepens and expands the Reiki experience.  This two-day course certifies the student as a Level II Reiki practitioner.  The student is attuned to the three major Reiki symbols and learns their use.  Distance work is introduced and practiced.  Class time will include reading and discussion information from the provided Reiki II text, receiving the two Level II attunements, learning the Reiki
symbols, practicing distance work and Reiki exchanges.  Level I Reiki certification is a prerequisite.  12 contact hours.  (Students should wear comfortable clothing and are encouraged to bring a blanket for comfort.)


Core Values and the Ethics of Bodywork and Massage Therapy (2008)
      This course is designed for practicing therapists who wish to explore their core values in the context of Maryland Regulations and the NCBTMB Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.  Topics include: professionalism, legal and ethical requirements, confidentiality, business practices, roles and boundaries, and prevention of sexual misconduct.  This course meets Maryland CE requirements.  3 contact hours. Guidelines for Professional Ethical Behavior (2008)
      This course is designed for therapists who are interested in expanding their knowledge of massage ethics as it relates to roles and boundaries, legal and ethical requirements and business practice.The significance of  motivation, intention, responsibility, compassion, truth, and peer consultation will be explored. Massage Therapy:  Communicable Disease Update (2008)
      Why should you attend?  Learning is the first step to protect yourself and your clients, to fulfill Maryland’s requirement for 3 hours of education in communicable diseases.  The class includes terminology, classification of  microorganisms, normal flora, infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS), epidemiology, methods to control microbes and pathogens.  Together, with others in the class and your instructor, you will discuss how to apply this information in your practice.  This course meets Maryland CE requirements.  3 contact hours.

      Nancy E.
