Medical Coding

The Medical Coding training program at Garrett College is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and understanding needed to analyze medical records and assign codes that classify diagnoses and procedures while applying the principles of professional and ethical conduct.  The program should prepare the student for an entry-level position as a medical coder in a hospital, clinic, or other health care facility.  For more information, please contact Terry Beachy, 301-895-4700.


Medical Terminology
      Learn to communicate, write, and interpret medical terms effectively.  Includes organization of terms on the basis of roots, prefixes, suffixes and derivates. Study of body systems is included.

Medical Coding Specialist I
      This course provides a basic introduction to ICD and CPT-4 coding.  Topics include current procedural terminology (CPT) overview, review of conventions used in ICD, and fundamental coding guidelines.  Coding principles and practices are stressed.  Prerequisite: Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology.

Medical Coding Advanced
      This course will provide a review of specific test material covered by medical coding examinations.  Topics include: coding guidelines, identifying barriers to reimbursement, implementing knowledge and tools to ensure accurate code submission, and improving overall code awareness.  Legal issues and laboratory testing will also be discussed.

Introduction to Pharmacology
      Designed to give an overview of Pharmacology to the student. An introduction of commonly prescribed medications, their classifications, schedules, and common adverse reactions. Students will examine the prescription process (dosage, calculation, administrations, and different drug forms) and review basic federal and state regulations.

Study of Disease Process - Pathophysiology
      This course teaches students certain elements of human diseases according to organ and body system, manifestations and pathological processes. Frequency and significance of diagnostic and therapeutic approach, and multisystem diseases are also reviewed.

Medical Insurance Billing
      This course is designed to provide training for individuals who want to learn insurance billing and work in a doctor’s office, hospital, or in a home-based business. Instruction will focus on learning to complete the universal claim form accepted by all insurance carriers. Prerequisites: Medical Terminology, Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Coding Specialist I & II.
