Garrett College will be offering opportunities
to meet the new staff development hours as required by the state of Maryland. This
course is designed for family day care providers, child care centers, nursery
school teachers, foster parents and anyone who may be involved with child care. The
course is approved by the Maryland Child Care Administration. A flyer,

Infant/Toddler Training for Caregivers
This 45-hour course is designed specifically
for those individuals who are daycare or Head Start child care workers. Topics

School Age Child Care Training
This 45-hour course is designed specifically
for those individuals who wish to obtain basic knowledge and skills necessary
to provide school age child care. Topics to be covered include: developmental
characteristics; state licensing requirements and regulations; communication;
positive guidance strategies; physical activities; health, nutrition, accident
prevention and child protection; program planning; physical space planning;
resources; and integrating life skills.

Real Estate Principles and Practices for Salespersons
This course is designed to prepare you to enter
the field of real estate sales. Upon completion of
the course, you will have reviewed information concerning
the principles and practices of real estate sales enabling
you to challenge the state real estate examination for licensing.

Real Estate Broker Training
This is a packaged series of three courses designed
to prepare real estate salespersons with the required 135 hours of education
to challenge the Maryland Real Estate Broker Examination. Upon completion
of this course, students will be familiar with the principles of real estate,
property management, rules of agency and listings, transfer of title, title
insurance, advanced appraising of residential and commercial property, new
subdivision, condominium, advanced finance, procuring cause, human rights and
community relations, mathematics, disclosure, and hazardous substances. License
Law and Ethics will be stressed throughout this course.

Preventative
Pavement Maintenance 
This course is offered in conjunction with the
University of Maryland T2 Center. This course covers preventative maintenance
treatments such as chip seals, slurry seals, and micro surfacing and discusses
when and where each technique could be effective. The course presents
application methods, including preparation, materials, equipment, operations
and safety, along with practical tips on avoiding trouble.

Class B Commercial Driver’s License Training
Program
This course will cover the essentials to obtain
a Class B license including the following: pre-trip inspection, various skills
in the yard, and over-the-road instruction along with a basic overview of map
reading and log books. At the completion of training, the student will demonstrate
at their local Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a Class B license.
To expand, the Class B license allows an individual
to operate any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of
26,001 or more pounds; with any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess
of 10,000 pounds GVWR. To qualify for the training, the individual must have
a valid driver’s license, be 18 to obtain a learner’s permit for
a CDL intrastate license and 21 years of age for an interstate license. The
license must be a full driver’s license for 18 months or more, hence
not a provisional license. To register for the course, the student must already
possess the following paperwork: a current Department of Transportation (DOT)
Physical which cannot expire during the training period, a drug screen less
than sixty (60) days old, and a Class B, CDL Learner’s Permit.
The training is being held at Mountaintop Truck
Driving Institute located in the old county garage located at Hilltop, three
miles east of Grantsville, near the intersection of U. S. Routes 40 and 219,
just north of interstate 68.

Backflow Prevention 
As a result of completing this intensive three-day
course, participants will be tested and awarded certification upon passing
the two-part exam. Training will include discussions, group and hands-on
activities, and individual work. The backflow prevention assembly tester and
repairer certificate program is designed to certify the successful completion
of training on topics including federal, state and local regulations, waterborne
pathogens, types of assemblies, installation requirements, testing procedures,
troubleshooting and repair techniques. Acceptable guidelines and practices,
cross connection control, types and causes of backflow, and case histories
will also be presented prior to the exam.

Hazardous Material Training Certification—Recurrent
The Department of Transportation (DOT) (49 CFR
172.704) makes training mandatory for almost anyone who handles hazardous materials,
regardless of the amount. This affects employees who select or fill hazardous
materials packages, label containers, complete shipping papers, load or unload
vehicles, transload hazardous materials, or operate vehicles used in the transport
of hazardous materials. Receive your required training and learn how to
comply with all regulations at this comprehensive teaching. DOT requires initial
training and recurrent training every three years. This class meets both your
initial and recurrent training requirements. Topics include, but
are not limited to the following topics: general awareness/familiarization,
function specific, safety, and security awareness. The course is being taught
by Craig Talbott of the Maryland Motor Truck Association. At the completion
of training, a test will be administered and certifications of training will
be provided.

NEC Update 2008 
This course provides Master and Journeyman Electricians
with a review of significant areas of the National Electrical Code 2008. The
instructor for this course is Wayne Robinson. Mr. Robinson is a Chief
Electrical Inspector and Electrical Supervisor, as well as Master Code instructor,
and inventor of the Kenny Clamp®, an electrical connector for bonding the
grounding electrode conductor to electrical enclosures and separately derived
systems.

Fork Lift Training
This course is designed to teach the student
how to properly operate an industrial powered forklift. The course satisfies
29 CRF 1910.178 of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s
(OSHA) Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Standard. Students will receive
formal training in the classroom, practical training with hands on instruction
and an evaluation upon completion of training with successful participants
receiving a certificate of training and wallet card. Topics include the following:
pre-inspection, loading and unloading, maneuvering and operational skills,
rules and regulations, and an emphasis on safety. The course is being instructed

HVAC Exam Prep 
If the only thing standing in your way to a promotion or
new position is passing the Maryland State HVAC License Examination,
then this course is for you. This customized training
has been developed to prepare students using review of test
topics and mock tests. Safety, electrical motors and
controls, piping, refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating
will be thoroughly discussed. Other topics to be covered
include variable air volume (VAV) boxes, introduction to
manual J calculations and information on section 608 of the

Approved Flagger Safety Training 
This course is offered in conjunction with the
University of Maryland T2 Center. Flaggers are in a very dangerous,
yet extremely responsible position and play a critical role in temporary traffic
control. The safety of workers, motorists and pedestrians is dependent
upon the flaggers’ performance. Since the flagger position involves
safety, proper training is vital. Flaggers are expected to pass a test
to prove their proficiency and competence level. A MD SHA approved ATSSA
flagger card will be issued upon satisfactory completion of this course.

Advanced Welding II (WT 138)
This course is designed for students who wish
to develop additional skill in MIG and TIG welding. Students will learn
and employ welding procedures and practices required for passing the American
Welding Society (AWS) MIG/TIG certification test for both mild steel pipe and
mild steel up to one inch in thickness. (This certification is the standard
D1.1 2000 SMAW/GTAW.) AWS certification is recognized throughout the
United States and Puerto Rico. Students who wish to take the AWS certification
test at the conclusion of the course may do so for an additional fee.
