Garrett College offers several distance learning options for students. Courses are designated as online, hybrid, ITV, or web-enhanced. This orientation mainly covers what you need to know about taking an online or hybrid course.

Why you should complete this orientation
The goal of this website is to increase your knowledge and confidence in taking an online course at Garrett College.

By completing this orientation, you should expect to:

  • Recognize the difference between an online, hybrid and web-enhanced course;
  • Understand the registration requirements and fees involved in taking an online course;
  • Gain a basic familiarity with appropriate learning and studying strategies for distance and online learning;
  • Become familiar with online course tools, methods and requirements;
  • Get acquainted with course communication and interaction tools and protocols;
  • Be fairly comfortable with course delivery software and hardware and boost your technical proficiency;
  • Understand your responsibilities as a distance or online student;
  • Be able to resolve technical problems or find appropriate assistance, if needed.

To get the most out of the orientation, you should carefully read all the information in each section thoroughly and complete the following tutorials nand self-tests:

Taking these assessments may be helpful to finding out if Online Learning is right for you.

  • Complete the "Is Distance Learning Right for Me?" questionnaire hosted by FCC.
  • Complete the Computer Literacy survey. These surveys will help you identify what skills or learning strategies you may need to work on in order to be successful with distance or online learning.
  • Review the Learning in an Online Course section, where you will learn how to access and use the Blackboard learning management system to retrieve course work and communicate online.
  • Take the “TILT” Information Literacy orientation
