Initial Logon to Garrett College Network


Faculty and Staff must fill out and sign a Network Request Form.

Once the form is signed by all individuals and returned to the IT Department (TC-310), we can create and/or modify the account.

Password Practices


Choosing Passwords
  • DO NOT use passwords that are based on personal information.
  • DO use a combo of words, numbers, special characters, and both upper and lower case letters.
  • DO develop a mnemonic for remembering complex passwords. (Example – From the Doors' Soft Parade – "All our lives we sweat and save, building for a shallow grave." – a0lws@sb4@sg
  • DO NOT use your username as your password.
  • DO NOT use words that can be found in the dictionary (English or foreign language).
  • DO NOT use keyboard combinations, such as "qwerty" and "asdzxc".


Protecting Passwords
  • DO change your password regularly.
  • DO choose passwords that you will remember so you DO NOT have to write them down.
  • DO use different passwords on different systems.
  • DO NOT give your passwords to anyone.
  • DO NOT write your password down and leave it on your desk, next to your PC, under your keyboard, or post-it on your monitor.
  • DO NOT store your passwords on your cell phone or smart phone.
  • Watch for attackers trying to trick you to reveal passwords (through phone calls or e-mails).
  • Watch for someone looking over your shoulder while you are typing your password.
  • DO NOT allow systems to "remember" your passwords.
  • DO always log off when finished using a computer.

General E-mail Information


  • Garrett College email is for business use only.
  • DO NOT share your email password with anyone.
  • DO NOT email the entire college community with large attachments. Use the intranet website and send out a link.
  • DO NOT store Voicemail messages. There is no reason to keep voice mail messages forever.
  • Clean out sent items.

Outlook 2007


Check disk quota on your Exchange account in Outlook 2007

  • From the Tools menu, choose Mailbox Cleanup.
  • Click View Mailbox Size.

Empty Deleted Items in Outlook 2007

  • Right click the Deleted Items folder.
  • Select Empty Deleted Items.
  • Choose Yes to confirm delete.

Outlook 2010


Check disk quota on your Exchange account in Outlook 2010

  • Click the File tab and select Info in the left column.
  • In the Mailbox Cleanup section, click Cleanup Tools.
  • Select Mainbox Cleanup from the drop-down list.
  • Click the View Mailbox Size... button.

Empty Deleted Items in Outlook 2010

  • Right click the Deleted Items folder.
  • Select Empty Folder.
  • Choose Yes to confirm delete.

Archive E-mail in Outlook 2010

  • Create a directoryon your C:\ to save the archive file.
    • C:\OutlookArchive (no spaces)
  • Open Outlook 2010.
  • Click File, then Options.
  • Click Advanced on the left menu.
  • Click AutoArchive Settings button.
  • Click Apply Settings to all folders now.
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK.

How to Change Your Network Password


Your Windows password is the password you use to log on to your computer, and other college resources.

You can help keep your computer more secure by changing your Windows password regularly, and by using a strong password. Make sure to Read about Password Best Practices.

You can change your password at any time by following these steps.
  • While logged into your computer, Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Change a password.
  • Type your old password, type your new password, type your new password again to confirm it, and then press ENTER.

Classroom Technology


Most learning spaces at Garrett College are equipped with technology to assist in the learning experience.

This technology includes computers, laptops, wireless internet, projectors, sound systems and other related hardware. If a space does not have the technology to support an event, equipment can be requested to fulfill the needed. All requests must be made 48 business hours in advance, however earlier requests will ensure that the equipment is available. All equipment requests must be made by sending an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (from a Garrett College email account) and include the following information:
  • Time and Date of Event
  • Type of Equipment needed
  • Time the Event will end
  • Will the Event need an operator


Once that information is received, the availability of the equipment will be assessed and a confirmation will be sent. Please note that academic requests (credit courses) take priority over student events and non-credit courses.
