Financial Aid

FEDERAL SCHOOL CODE 010014

FAFSA on the Web will be available after January 1st at wwww.fafsa.gov. If you plan to attend in the Fall of 2013, use the 2013-14 FAFSA. Information is based on 2012 income. You may obtain a FAFSA worksheet on the FAFSA website to help you prepare the information you need to fill out the FAFSA.

Most returning students may choose to do the renewal FAFSA which will automatically prefill your demographic information and you only need to update Financial Information. This is done on the same FAFSA website www.fafsa.gov. You should receive an email from the Department of Education reminding you that you should fill out your renewal FAFSA.

Don’t forget you have to have a PIN and so does your parent (if dependent) to sign the FAFSA. If you have a PIN from last year, use the same one. If you or your parent need a PIN go to www.pin.ed.gov.

IF YOU ESTIMATE YOUR TAX INFORMATION ON THE FAFSA TO MEET A DEADLINE, YOU MUST GO BACK IN AFTER TAXES ARE COMPLETE AND UTILIZE THE IRS DATA RETRIEVAL (using the IRS data retrieval tool greatly reduces the chances of being chosen for verification).

TAX RETURNS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED AGAIN THIS YEAR (under the new law, parents and students must either utilize the IRS data retrieval tool on the FAFSA or order an official tax transcript from the IRS.

NOT EVERYONE CAN USE THE IRS DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL (e.g.: married filing separately, head of household and persons who separated or divorced after Jan. 1st 2012.) Those persons in these categories will have to request an IRS transcript if chosen for verification.

Maryland State aid deadline is still March 1st. If you qualify for Maryland aid, you will receive an email from MDCAPS to go to their website and accept your award. Turn spam blockers off to ensure receipt of email. Maryland residents may obtain a MDCAPS logon to view and accept awards. http://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us.

Garrett County Scholarship Applications and Garrett College Foundation application may be found on the Garrett College Financial Aid Website.  You may download and print these applications and mail, fax or email them to the financial aid office.
