Scholarships Available for GC Students

Cissy VanSickle, Director of Financial Aid at Garrett College has recently notified Garrett College students that they have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship to be awarded by the Delaware –District of Columbia-Maryland (DE-DC-MD) Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. The organization has established a scholarship fund that will award a minimum of three $1,000 scholarships to students who attend an eligible institution within each geographic area.

Students must meet the following criteria to be considered for this scholarship. They must attend an eligible DE-DC-MD institution during the July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015 academic year. Garrett College does meet this qualification. In addition the student must demonstrate financial need as defined by the FAFSA and Garrett College and meet grade point average (GPA) requirements.

The required GPA standing for undergraduates includes a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or the equivalent; at least a second year standing as defined by Garrett College prior to the start of the 2014-2015 academic year; or completion of one-half of a one year course of study in a private career school.

Applicants must be enrolled as full time students at Garrett College and submit the completed application and all required documents, including an essay and letter of recommendation, to the Garrett College Financial Aid Office. The Financial Aid Director must certify application eligibility to complete the application process.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship must submit a brief essay, no more than one typed page in length, explaining why they feel they would be a good candidate for this scholarship. The essay should include educational and career goals, jobs held while in college, volunteer or community service performed, and any special circumstances that the Scholarship Committee should be aware of in making a selection.

A letter of recommendation from an academic counselor or professor must be submitted with the scholarship application.

The Garrett College Financial Aid Director may certify only one (1) eligible candidate and must submit the completed scholarship application by April 18, 2014. Applicants will be notified of their status in early May.
