GC Salutes Men's Basketball Team, Shows Maryland Pride

The Garrett College Lakers Men’s Basketball team concluded the playing season with a record of 20 wins to 12 losses amid cheers and support from the Garrett College community. Under the direction of Head Coach Dennis Gibson and his coaching staff, the Lakers earned the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on the court during the recent NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Division 2 tournament in Danville, Ill.

At the tournament the Lakers challenged Cincinnati State Technical and Community College of Clifton, Ohio (65-80), John Wood Community College from Quincy, Ill. (93-92), and South Suburban College of Holland, Ill. (96-97 in overtime).

It seems that in addition to their tenacious court skill, the Garrett Lakers also captured the attention of commentators and fans with their choice of attire. Accessorizing their baby blue uniforms and shoes, the Lakers sported Maryland state socks vibrantly colored in the black, red, yellow and white of the state flag.

The GC men’s basketball team members had received their game socks during the Maryland State Conference Tournament and chose to wear them in Danville to show their Maryland pride. Following the hard-fought games of the national tournament, the folks back home on the college campus decided to show their support for Laker Nation by also donning the Maryland state footwear. Socks were ordered and proudly worn by GC faculty, staff, and administrators.

Ann Wellham, Garrett College Dean of Marketing and Enrollment, described the excitement back home during the tournament. “Thanks to the NJCAA TV we were able to watch all of our team’s games. We really got a kick out of the commentators talking throughout the games. Our Lakers created quite a stir in Illinois with regard to their nail-biting games, baby blue uniforms and shoes, and also for their game socks. We decided to purchase Maryland socks and wear them with our team to have a picture taken to commemorate this exciting event as well as our pride in Garrett College and Maryland,” she said.

Garrett College President Dr. Richard MacLennan also voiced his appreciation of the members of the men’s basketball team. “We are very proud of our team and the way that they played, their behavior at the tournament, and the way that they represented our college and state,” he said.
