Michael to Speak at GC Commencement

Garrett College has announced that Rob Michael will be the commencement speaker for this year’s graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 17. A Garrett County business leader, he was a 1974 graduate of GC majoring in business administration. During his student years at GC, he was involved in many of the school's activities including the publication of the first school newspaper and the first yearbook. In addition, he served as vice-president of the student government and president of his class. Nominated by Professor Joan Crawford Michael was selected as One of Americas Best Junior College Students.

Following his graduation from Garrett College Michael earned his bachelor degree at Davis and Elkins College in Davis W. Va., and his master of business administration degree from University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. He served on the Garrett College's first Foundation Board of Directors and later served as Chairman of the Garrett College Board of Trustees.

Michael is a nationally awarded agent for State Farm Insurance which he has represented for nearly 40 years. He is well known for his philanthropic activity within Garrett County as well as his volunteerism with many boards, clubs, and civic organizations.

Michael was awarded both the Heise Award in 2006 and the Golden Ambassador Award in 2012 which represent Garrett County's highest honorariums among business leaders and volunteerism awards. In addition, he earned the award for Outstanding Contributions to Garrett College in 2010 and the Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year award in 2013. He is currently President-Elect of Ronald McDonald House Charities Board of Morgantown.

Michael has served as an adjunct instructor of Marketing and Business Law at Garrett College and Risk Management Economics at Frostburg University. Son of the late Clyde W. Michael and Mary Moran Michael, he resides in Oakland with his wife Barb and is the father of Emmett and Bailey Michael.
