Meet Your Maker Meet-Up Scheduled for August 12

A special hour, starting at 11a.m. at the Mountain Maker Fest on August 12 is reserved for those in the community that want to learn about, or share their experiences with, the design and creation of “things” made in our region.  Makers are creative, hands-on folks in all walks of life that enjoy creating things as a hobby, artistic pursuit, do-it-yourself project or business venture. Some use electronic components, while others use Lego blocks, wood, metal or fabric to create their products.

The “show and tell” hour will be dedicated to celebrating and sharing the work of our mountain makers.  For example, we currently have a craftswoman that knits octopuses scheduled to talk and share her approach.  On the other end of the spectrum, we have a hobbyist that will be speaking about his passion for making “flies” for fishing.  Others include “techies” that will share their pursuits and outputs and an amateur artist that will demonstrate making paintings using paints that conduct electricity!

While a few makers are pre-scheduled, the plan is to have plenty of time for others to come up and share their stories and products with the other makers in the room.  Participants will be allotted 5-10 minutes to share their story, product and approach. If you make something, or want to make something, or just want to hear from other creative people, come out to the free Maker Fest show and tell hour at Garrett College’s Career Technology Training Center in Accident on August 12 at 11 a.m.

Please also come by earlier that morning to participate in the county’s all hands, all ages attempt at creating a record Great Ball Contraption (GBC)!  Participants in the GBC effort will learn, engage and have fun.  There will also be a number of concurrent workshops offered, starting at 9 a.m. as well as a “happy hour” Maker Meet-Up with free pizza for the first 50 registrants starting at 12:30 at Smiley’s on the lake.
