Tumbarello named Garrett College Enrollment Management Director



Mike Tumbarello’s broad experience in market analysis, strategic marketing and business development – along with his extensive ties to the Garrett County business community – were all factors leading to his recent selection as Garrett College’s new director of enrollment management.

“The first step to growing enrollment is ensuring we have the right mix of academic programs to address local employment opportunities and potential students’ career goals,” said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College’s president.  “That requires accurate market analysis, which is one of Mike’s key skills.  Once we know we have the right programs in place, and which programs appeal to what potential student groups, I am confident Mike can provide the leadership to effectively market those programs and recruit students.”

Midcap said Tumbarello’s nontraditional background – as an entrepreneur, private sector executive, Johns Hopkins University business faculty member, and most recently as director of the Garrett College Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation - will be an effective complement to the backgrounds of the admissions team members Tumbarello will be leading.

“Our staff already has the traditional admissions and high school recruitment experience you’d expect to see in a college admissions office,” said Dr. Midcap.  “Mike brings a unique perspective and background that I think will create a strong, more diverse enrollment management team.”

Nicole Christian, president and CEO of the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, said Tumbarello’s appointment will be well-received in the Garrett County business community.

“Mike’s business acumen, paired with his marketing expertise, will provide the college a connection with the local business community that has not previously existed,” said Christian.  “Through Mike’s work with the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship he has developed an inside perspective that will certainly help to provide programming designed to meet the needs of our business community.”

Tumbarello said he is looking forward to the opportunity presented by his appointment.

“Garrett College has so much to offer to students of all backgrounds,” said Tumbarello.  “I’m looking forward to working as part of a broad-based college team to ensure we are fine-tuning our offerings to meet community needs and effectively marketing those offerings to our potential students.”

Dr. Sarah Garrett, the college’s vice president for instruction and student services, said Tumbarello’s high-energy approach should help create an agile enrollment management team that can quickly address enrollment opportunities.

“Mike truly understands how to market the best of what an institution has to offer and has demonstrated experience in putting that knowledge and understanding into action to gain real results,” said Dr. Garrett.

While the number of local high school graduates is declining, Tumbarello believes effective marketing can allow the college to gain a larger share of that shrinking market.  He also thinks expanded outreach to the county’s growing home-school market, exploration of additional dual enrollment and early college opportunities, increased online learning options, and a more interactive experience for individuals visiting the college’s website can help grow enrollment.

“The way prospective students interact with colleges is rapidly changing,” said Tumbarello.  “And that relationship is becoming more technology-driven.  We have to make sure we are able to communicate with prospects using the latest technology while still providing the personal touch.”
