Mountain Top College Expo Slated at GC

The Mountain Top College Expo, sponsored by the Garrett County Board of Education and Garrett College, will be held on Monday, Oct. 8, in the new gymnasium on the college’s McHenry campus. Attendees can begin visiting with college representatives at 6:30 p.m. “This annual college fair provides Garrett County students with information to help them be better prepared to make decisions about their future,” said Rachelle Davis, Garrett College Director of Admissions, who is one of the Expo coordinators. The event is free and open to the public and students of all ages.

The program begins at 6 p.m. with a financial aid presentation, also in the new gymnasium complex. Cissy VanSickle, Director of Student Financial Aid at Garrett College, will share information about federal and state aid, as well as scholarship opportunities. She will be available until 7 p.m. to answer financial aid questions.

Davis noted that the Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to explore the many options for further education in the region, including two and four-year colleges, universities, and technical schools. This year, the Maryland State Policy also will be represented. To date, schools from Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and even Maine have registered to send representatives. Information will be available on a wide variety of programs of study, student life, athletic opportunities, and financial assistance.

A traditional feature of the Expo is the awarding of scholarships. At least two scholarships, which can be used at any college, will be awarded to Northern and Southern High School seniors. The Garrett College Foundation also will award two book scholarships. Any attending senior is eligible for a book scholarship, which can be used in the Garrett College Bookstore.

Following the College Expo, participants are invited to swim at the Garrett College Community Aquatics & Recreation Complex (CARC) until 10 p.m. at the reduced rate of $5. For more information about the community swim, persons may contact the CARC at 301-387-3786.

The college gymnasium and CARC are located on Mosser Road, just beyond the college’s main campus. For more information about the Mountaintop College Expo, persons may call the Garrett College Office of Admissions at 301-387-3044 or toll-free 866-554-2773.
