GC Pre-Nursing Students Accepted in ACM Program

When spring semester 2013 begins 14 students from the Garrett College (GC) Allied Health Services program will begin their nursing degree studies Allegany College of Maryland (ACM).

The students, who have already been accepted in the ACM Nursing program offered in Oakland are: Shannon Anderson, Davis, W.Va.; Kenzie Craig, Justine DelSignore, Christopher Fratz-Orr, Joy Beckman, Holli Hoalcraft, Stephanie Sanders, Amber Sheally, and Tiffany Beeman, all from Oakland; Christen Bergstrom from Accident; Jennifer Hartlove and Kelley Wagner from McHenry; Caitlyn Virts from Kitzmiller; and Emily Yoder from Swanton.

Rebecca Engle of Grantsville will attend nursing program classes on the Cumberland campus of ACM.

The ACM nursing program in Oakland only accepts new students every two years. The next applicants will be considered for the program beginning in 2015.

Garrett College has an articulated nursing transfer program with Allegany College of Maryland which allows students interested in pursuing a nursing degree at ACM to complete required preparatory non-nursing course work at GC in the Allied Health Services curriculum. Among the required credit classes are those in writing, humanities, algebra, psychology, human growth and development, sociology biology, microbiology, and anatomy and physiology.

GC Professor of Biology Carolyn Deniker said she is pleased with the success of these students. “I am very happy for them and proud of them. They are all excellent students - very smart and very focused,” she said.

Deniker also noted that students who come into the Allied Health Services program are goal-oriented and dedicated to their studies. Often they are adult learners beginning a new career. “We get very bright people in these classes and they excel in our program which is challenging,” she added.

GC has a similar articulation agreement for pre-nursing transfers to Davis and Elkins College as well as articulation agreements with ACM in other Allied Health Services preparatory curricula including dental hygiene, medical assistant, medical lab technician, occupational therapy assistant, physical therapy assistant, radiology technology, and respiratory therapy.
