McKenzie Elected to National Library Association Board

Garrett College Instructional Librarian Krista McKenzie was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), one of the divisions of the American Library Association (ALA).

A national association of librarians, library workers, and advocates YALSA’s stated mission is to expand and strengthen library services for teens, aged 12-18. Through its member-driven advocacy, research, and professional development initiatives, YALSA builds the capacity of libraries and librarians to engage, serve and empower teens. Founded in 1957 the organization is headquartered in Chicago and currently has more than 5,200 members.

Garrett College Interim Library Director Ellen Sheaffer made the announcement last week noting that McKenzie’s selection is quite an accomplishment for someone who has only been an ALA member for 5 years.

“Krista McKenzie is an extraordinary librarian. Garrett College is really fortunate to have someone with the talent and motivation to represent the library and college at the national level in her profession while at the same time maintaining high levels of performance and participation in her job. We are all so proud of this accomplishment,” Sheaffer said, adding that having McKenzie at GC with her background in young adult services has also been helpful in getting books and other materials that strike a chord with the student population.

Among McKenzie’s duties as a board member of YALSA will be participating in the group that sets the agenda for the American Library Association’s Young Adult Services nationwide.

“Working with young adults is something I love doing and is very rewarding at the same time. I feel very honored that the membership elected me to serve in this capacity. I look forward to working with my fellow board members to continue to pursue YALSA’s mission of creating and providing quality resources and materials to help young adults all over the world.”

McKenzie will be sworn into office for a three-year term on July 1st during the YALSA board meeting at the Annual American Library Association Conference in Chicago.
