Foundation Board Members Enhance Funding Knowledge

Development Retreat for the Garrett College Foundation Board of Directors was recently held initiating what Cherie Krug, Foundation Executive Director, hopes will become an annual educational event. The half-day forum at Brookside Inn, Aurora, W.Va., was deemed a success by all who attended and resulted in laying plans for future trainings and the continued growth of the College and the Foundation through charitable and philanthropic giving.

The purpose of the retreat was to enhance skills and knowledge on the best practices for acquiring for acquiring and sustaining charitable gifts which will grow funding to achieve the strategic goals of both the Foundation and the College.

Rick Johnson, facilitator for the event, outlined strategic points in donor development, including ways to encourage a prospective donor to become an active and engaged donor. He also underscored the various ways a person could contribute to the Foundation as well as the importance of the development roles of the Foundation Board members, the college faculty and staff, and the president.

Johnson, who is currently Vice President of Finance and Operations at Harford Community College, has an extensive background in fund-raising. His education includes a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Missouri in Columbia; a bachelor’s degree from Principia College in Illinois; and the Graduate Harvard Management Development Program for Higher Education. His professional service includes Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at the University of Arizona, and Associate Dean for Finance and Administration at The George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University.

Krug commented on the positive impact of this training session. ““As a result of this retreat, the Foundation has decided to begin holding quarterly ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions ahead of each Board meeting. Also to build on this momentum, the Development Committee of the Foundation Board has invited the Garrett College Executive Council to attend their August Committee meeting,” she said.
