Tumbarello Elected VP of MD Business Incubation Group

Garrett College’s Mike Tumbarello has been elected vice president of the Maryland Business Incubation Association (MBIA). In his role at GC, he coordinates the Garrett Center for Entrepreneurship, which includes oversight of the Garrett Information Enterprise Center (GIEC), Garrett County’s business incubator.

The MBIA is an association of business incubator managers dedicated to sharing resources, information, and best practices among the members with the overall goal of promoting business incubation excellence within all Maryland’s incubators. More than 20 member groups are under the umbrella of the organization.

Tumbarello will replace MBIA vice president Renee Winski who is leaving her incubator role to head Leadership Maryland. “I was asked by the Maryland Business Incubation Association president Bob Snyder if I would consider serving as the new Vice President of the MBIA. While a bit surprised, I accepted the nomination and I was just elected this morning at our incubator membership meeting conference call,” Tumbarello said last week.

Working with the statewide incubation association links the GIEC program and other aspects of the Garrett Center for Entrepreneurship very closely with sources of information as well as funding, Tumbarello explained. “Serving as vice president of MBIA will actually help continue to enhance Garrett’s position and visibility on the radar of other incubators in the state and important organizations such as Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development, and TEDCO, an independent organization that strives to be Maryland’s lead source for entrepreneurial business assistance and seed funding for the development of startup companies in Maryland’s innovation economy,” he said.

The GEIC incubator and the Garrett Center for Entrepreneurship are under the purview of Julie Yoder as Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. She underscored the significance of Tumbarello’s election as vice president of MBIA. “The fact that Mike was asked to accept the nomination and was elected certainly emphasizes the respect which he has earned statewide for his work on behalf of entrepreneurship. In the short span of one year that he has been in his post at Garrett College he has accomplished an impressive amount on behalf of workforce and business development. We are all very proud of him,” she said.
