What is Verification?  What this short video. Click Here!

Verification is a federal financial aid regulation. Students are selected at random by the United States Department of Education. Students are notified once the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is completed and process. The student will receive a Student Aid Report either by email or regular mail if no email address was provided in the initial application process. Students should read their Student Aid Report carefully and provide Garrett College with the documentation required. Garrett College reserves the right to select any student not already selected by the United States Department of Education.

Students will be notified by email of documents required to complete verification. On occasion the documents provided may prompt us to request additional documentation. We would appreciate your full cooperation in this matter. Students may access all required documents on the myFinAid portal.

Instructions for Using the IRS Data Retrieval or

Requesting an IRS Tax Transcript

As a tax filer you have several options for completing the required income verification process:

Option 1: IRS Data Retrieval

Update your FAFSA on the Web tax filing status of “Will File” to “Already Filed.” Select the IRS Data Retrieval option and have your income information transferred from the IRS to your FAFSA. A successful transfer will allow us to forego the need to obtain a 2014 Tax Return Transcript, so long as income data fields are not subsequently changed by you and your FAFSA. Our office highly recommends this option because it avoids reporting errors and significant processing delays.   Please be aware that electronically filed tax return information will be available for IRS Data Retrieval in 1-2 weeks and paper tax returns will be available 6-8 weeks after the return is filed with the IRS.

Please note that this option is not available if:

  • your marital status changed after December 31, 2014,

  • you filed married filing separately,

  • you filed an amended return,

  • you filed a foreign tax return or

  • you completed a paper FAFSA.

  • Online request available at IRS website

    • Get Transcript ONLINE or Get Transcript by MAIL

    • Sign In or Create and Account with the IRS

    • Select Return Transcript for “2014”

Option 2: IRS Tax Transcript

If Option 1 is not available a copy of a 2014 IRS Tax Return Transcript is required to be submitted to our office. Please be aware that electronically filed tax return information will be available to request in 1-2 weeks and paper tax return filed will be available to request in 6-8 weeks after the return is filed with the IRS. You can access your Transcript immediately and print them after setting up an account online at

To request a 2014 IRS Tax Transcript from the IRS, follow one of the options listed below:

  • Telephone Request call 1-800-908-9946

    • Select OPTION 2 to request an IRS Tax Return Transcript and then enter 2014

Students will NOT be considered for any federal aid until verification is complete. Late documents will be accepted but a delay in processing may occur.
