Responsible Computing
As you explore
the campus network and the Internet beyond, you will discover the many
advantages of network connectivity. This connectivity also requires
that you understand your responsibilities as a member of this community
of electronic learners so that you, as "user", will be able to protect
the integrity of the system as well as the integrity of other
users.
Use of
the campus network and all components of the network is not a right,
but rather a privilege you gain through the College. Remember, the
campus network and many of the components that make up or are attached
to the network are the property of Garrett College.
The following
Rules of Use are intended to help you use the campus computing and
network facilities responsibly and safely. Complying with
them will help assure that all of us use the system responsibly,
legally, and wit respect for the privacy of others. Should
any violations occur, the College reserves the right to take
appropriate actions against the violator.
| 1. |
Do not load software on
lab computers. This includes downloading files from the Internet
to the computer's hard drive. |
| 2. |
Do not modify system configuration.
This includes adding icons, moving files to new locations, changing
backgrounds and screensavers. |
| 3. |
No food, drink or tobacco
products are allowed in the Information Technology area. |
| 4. |
Do not attempt to repair
equipment, solve printer problems or in any way open up or modify
any piece of equipment in the labs. If you have a problem, ask
a work study or the lab technician for assistance. |

| Important
Information Concerning Lab Use |
| 1. |
When the computers in the
lab are turned on or restarted, you will be prompted to log
on the local area network. You should log on as "student" and
the password field should be left blank. Logging on in any other
manner will mean loss of network access. |
| 2. |
Access to the Internet
is possible in all labs. In order to send and receive e-mail,
you must obtain an account with http://www.hotmail.com/ |
| 3. |
PLEASE limit your printing
to those documents you really need to print. Laser cartridges
and paper are expensive and ultimately these costs end up being
passed on to the student as fees and tuition, so print only
what is deemed necessary. |
| 4. |
If you need help in the
labs, the work study/lab assistant is located in TC 304. If
he/she is not on duty at the time you need help, contact the
IT technician in TC 312. An alternative means of contact is
made by dialing 301-387-3115. |
| 5. |
Practice safe computing.
Back up your files often. Diskettes are prone to failure due
to bad sectors and formatting errors. We strongly recommend
the use of USB drives.
SAVE FILES OFTEN DURING USE. |
