Alex Snyder and Libby Holewski, Appalachian Expeditions

Founders and directors of Appalachian Expeditions, Alex Snyder and Libby Holewski, seek to inspire appreciation and awareness for the central Appalachian ecoregion through adventure, community, and sustainable living skills. Located in Davis, W.Va., Appalachian Expeditions serves as an outdoor education program, now entering its third year.

Snyder and Holewski are scheduled to speak at the upcoming adventure sports colloquium series on November 12th, 2019 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Room 1013 of the Center for Adventure and Outdoor Studies (CAOS) building at Garrett College in McHenry.

The pair met during graduate school at Prescott College in Prescott, Ariz. While roaming the southwest, they studied theories and practices that would eventually form the foundations of their program in Davis, W.Va., as part of the central Appalachian region.

Snyder wrote his thesis on how adventure programming can help to develop a sense of place; Holewski’s research focused on developing ecological identity and how that affects environmental ethics. Using their graduate school research as a foundation, their goal is to create more opportunities for people of all ages to venture outdoors and explore their own backyard.

They are excited to continue to grow their outdoor education program while developing a niche in the community, region and industry.

Although the colloquium series are part of a course for students enrolled in the adventure sports program, the general public is welcome and invited to attend presentations throughout the year. For more information, contact the Garrett College Adventure Sports office at 301-387-3330.
