Garrett College ready to help students earn as well as learn
Still time to register and attend classes for GC's fall semester
The benefits of earning an associate or a bachelor's degree are fairly well documented: expanded horizons as a student, meeting new and different people, experiencing new things, learning about things one is passionate about and, of course, preparing oneself for a career.
What many may not realize are the many economic benefits associated with a college education. While lifetime career earnings are dependent on a number of factors, including: field of study, career area, industry, location and of course, performance, it appears fairly certain that college graduates out earn high school graduates and they out-earn them to a very significant degree.
One study found that the typical bachelor's degree holder earned about $600,000 more than the average high school diploma holder over a lifetime. Those with an associate degree earned an average of $300,000 more over a lifetime than high school graduates.
While many high school graduates certainly hold their own relative to earnings and some careers do not require a bachelor's or even an associate degree, the numbers are compelling and provide a reason for all to consider a college education.
"Garrett County is fortunate to have a local, practical and cost-effective institution that can help students pursue their careers and pursue their passions," stated Mike Tumbarello, GC's director of enrollment management. "As an integral part of our community, we take great pride in working with local students and stakeholders to help enable their success."
Garrett College offers dozens of degree and certificate programs designed to provide students in preparing to transfer to a four year institution or for immediate entry into the work force.
Whether a science curriculum offered in the college's new STEM building or a business education designed to give students a leg-up in the competitive business world, Garrett College offers programs to take students and their career to the next level. Other programs allow students to tap into the health professions or participate in the growing computer and cyber security fields. Still others, unsure of their future career path, can benefit from obtaining a general studies degree, with the majority of courses available online.
According to Ashley Ruby, GC's director of the advising and academic success center, "we are equally comfortable working with a student with a clear academic and educational path or one without a solid plan. Garrett College and our faculty and staff truly excel at helping all students get their start. We provide a supportive, cost-effective foundation that allows students to pursue a wide variety of paths and also help students 'find themselves' as part of our learning community."
There is still plenty of time for any student to enroll for the upcoming fall semester at GC, which begins on Wednesday, September 4th.
"Anyone interested in discussing career and academic opportunities should feel free to reach out to us in the admissions office. There is still time and openings for the fall semester and we welcome the opportunity to work with students in any situation and at any stage of their life," stated Melissa Wass, coordinator of admissions at GC.
A complete list of GC programs and courses offered this fall can be viewed online at www.garrettcollege.edu. Individual appointments can also be scheduled to discuss financial aid, housing, and any accommodations, as appropriate, with college personnel.
