Garrett College to host MLK 2020 Hoopfest
Prep, post-grad, and high school teams slated for 4-day event
Garrett College will be the host site for a four-day men's basketball extravaganza featuring 17 prep, post-grad and high school squads over the Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend.
The MLK Hoopfest 2020 runs from Friday, January 17th through Monday, January 20th at the CARC Gymnasium on the Garrett College campus. Teams from Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Washington, D.C. are scheduled to participate.
Basketball fans can see all 22 games via a $20, four-day pass, or purchase day passes for $10 daily.
"We're excited about the opportunity for Garrett College to bring in multiple teams from different states and provide the community with high-level basketball at a variety of levels," Tournament Director Jon Hegeman said of the event. "We'd like to grow this into a yearly event that can draw teams from all over the country."
The format features teams playing within their own categories – preps vs. preps as well as the various high school levels (varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams) against similar competition. A complete schedule may be found at www.garrettlakers.com/landing/index.
Garrett College's varsity men's basketball team – featuring a 9-3 record prior to Monday night's game against Allegany College of Maryland – will play KOA Prep in Sunday's 1:30 p.m. contest.
The Garrett College freshman men's basketball team plays twice, hosting Huntington (W.Va.) Prep Blue Team Saturday and Scotland (Pa.) Campus Black Team Sunday in each day's 9 p.m. contest.
Huntington Prep is an example of the high caliber of participating teams, with several of its players already signed and committed to major, four-year university programs. Scotland Prep coach Christ Chaney has sent more than 140 players to Division I institutions, included 18 who were drafted or played in the NBA.
