GC, Garrett County Public Schools partner to host Garrett County College Expo on October 8

General public, parents encouraged to attend daytime event

Organizers from Garrett College and Garrett County Public Schools are once again preparing for the upcoming annual Garrett County College Expo. This year’s event is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and will be held at the Garrett College Community Aquatic & Recreation Complex (CARC) in McHenry.

The Garrett County College Expo is free to attend and open to the general public. Home school and private students, as well as parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

More than 40 representatives from colleges/universities, trade and technical schools, military branches, the Maryland State Police, unions and apprenticeship programs, and workforce programs are registered to attend.

"This annual event is a great opportunity for students and their parents to gather information and contacts to make the right academic and career decisions," stated Melissa Wass, coordinator of admissions at Garrett College.

"Information truly is power and the Expo provides a great venue for students to gain the knowledge they need to make informed, effective decisions," continued Wass.

Students in attendance will be entered to win a textbook scholarship and other giveaways. A scholarship booklet with information on nearly 100 scholarship opportunities will be available, courtesy of Garrett County Public Schools.

The Garrett College Foundation will award three textbook scholarships to a senior student from both Southern and Northern High School, as well as a student in a homeschool program.

Transportation has been arranged for Northern and Southern Garrett High School juniors and seniors to be bused to the event from the high schools. Juniors will have the opportunity to meet with the representatives from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Seniors will be attending two seminars from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. - one on financial aid and a presentation by Rick Rando, empowerment speaker. Seniors are then scheduled to meet with the representatives at the expo from 10:20 a.m. to 11:25 a.m.

Participating representatives are prepared to share and provide information on a wide variety of postsecondary education programs, including financial assistance and scholarships, athletic program opportunities, and student clubs and organizations.

The Garrett County College Expo provides a great opportunity for students and parents to explore the many options available for furthering education in the region.
