Garrett Institute for Lifelong Learning announces September classes
The Garrett Institute for Lifelong Learning (GILL) group, operating under Garrett College Continuing Education and Workforce Development, recently announced the upcoming class schedule for the month of September. GILL members seek to enrich their lives by participating in stimulating education, cultural and social programs. As such, the topic sessions are developed by the group.
Pine Needle Basket Making
Tuesday, September 10th, 6-9 p.m., GC Southern Outreach Center (Oakland)
The Native Americans used pine needles to create ceremonial and utilitarian baskets. In this three-hour class, participants will learn how to coil a pine needle basket on a walnut slice base. No prior basket making experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Instructor Lori Lewis has been a basket maker for over 25 years. Her work has been displayed at the Garrett County Arts Council Gallery in Oakland, Mountain City Traditional Arts in Frostburg; and the Art Emporium in Savannah, Georgia. The cost to attend is $20.
A Short Overview of Garrett County History
Wednesday, September 11th, 10-11:30 a.m., GC Southern Outreach Center
Back one more time, due to popular demand, Dr. Neal Brooks will provide an historical overview of our mountain county. Farming, mills, coal mining, lumbering, railroads and the lives of the people who made this area their home will be discussed. Bring questions and stories to share. Don’t miss the follow up museum tour planned for September 18th. The cost to attend this session is $9.
Garrett County Historical Museum Tour
Wednesday, September 18th, 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon, Historical Museum in Oakland
The Garrett County Historical Museum houses a treasure trove of exhibits related to the founding of Garrett County, the history of the land, and the way of life for Garrett County citizens from years past. Under the guidance of Bob Boal, local historian and past president of the Garrett County Historical Society, participants will explore the ten themed rooms, and will be transported to an era when hotels were bustling with business, trains came through town 12 times a day, and Deep Creek Lake was merely a stream. The cost to attend is $9.
Talk 'n Soup
Thursday, September 19th, 12 noon – 2 p.m., GC Southern Outreach Center
Bring a dish to share (soup will be provided) and enjoy talking after enjoying lunch and viewing a TED presentation. The goal of TED is to spark conversation, connection, and community. The talks are presented without bias and without a commercial, political, or religious agenda. This month’s topic is 'How to Green the World’s Deserts and Reverse Climate Change’, presented by Ann Stuck.
Medical Marijuana – A Police Perspective
Wednesday, September 25th, 10:30 a.m. – 12 noon, GC Southern Outreach Center
Last spring GILL hosted a presentation on the health benefits of medical marijuana and now we will explore the legal components. Garrett County Sheriff, Rob Corley, will give a presentation on the challenges faced by law enforcement officers. Testing practices, changing laws, differences in MD, WV, and PA laws, and conflicts with federal laws are some of the concerns. Bring your questions and expect a lively discussion. The cost for this session is $9.
