GC Foundation recognizes STEM donors

The Garrett College Foundation recently launched a comprehensive fundraising campaign - "The Campaign for Garrett: Realizing our Dream" - with a goal of raising $500,000 for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives, including scholarships and technology renewal.

More than half of the initial fundraising goal was raised through local community gifts and pledges prior to August's official campaign launch. First United Bank & Trust President Carissa Rodeheaver and Dr. Rosie Versteegen serve as campaign co-chairs.

"The response to this campaign has been truly incredible," said Dr. Richard Midcap, Garrett College's president. "It's clear the Garrett County community is committed to ensuring our students have access to a high-quality STEM education."

Recognizing that technology has a short life span, an endowment was established by the Foundation to assist the College with maintaining the facility's state-of-the-art equipment and funding scholarships for students pursuing a STEM education.

This initiative – which is the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of Garrett College – coincides with the opening of the college's new STEM building, an $8.526 million expansion and renovation project funded equally by the county and the state. A well-attended grand opening ceremony was held in early September.

"I am humbled by the generosity of our local community in supporting this very ambitious campaign," stated Cherie Krug, executive director of the GC Foundation. "These gifts will ensure that our children will always have access to state-of-the-art equipment in pursuing their dreams of a STEM education."

Major donors were publicly announced and recognized by the Foundation as part of the September 8th grand opening event. Naming gifts – including naming of rooms and student study spaces in the new facility – including STEM scholarships were acknowledged.
