Lakers produce another impressive performance

GC wrestlers 5th at Averett Cougar Open; Clark 3rd at 285 lbs.

Danville, VA – Garrett College churned out another impressive wrestling performance this past weekend, finishing fifth in the Averett Cougar Open. Five Lakers finished the tournament on the medal podium, paced by Tanner Clark's third-place finish at 285 pounds.

"Our goal was to place higher as a team and put more of our wrestlers on the podium than last year," said GC head coach John Chambers, whose first-year squad placed eighth at last year's Open with three wrestlers making podium appearances. "It's a great feeling and confidence-booster when our guys see that a smaller program like ours can compete and have some success against the type of programs who participated in this event."

Queens University of Charlotte, N.C. – which claimed four individual titles and also had two runner-up finishes – earned the team title with 146.5 points. Host Averett University edged Ferrum College, 124-122, to take second place. East Carolina University was fourth with 73.5 points while Garrett's 62 points earned the Lakers their fifth-place finish in the 18-team event.

All four teams that finished ahead of Garrett College are NCAA institutions, including one Division I (East Carolina University), one Division II (Queens University), and two Division III programs.

Laker Chris Estrada was fourth at 184 pounds while teammate Loic Tueguo took fifth at 197 pounds. GC's Darius Sprye and Trevor Fawley were sixth at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively.

The Lakers return to the mats for the Battler Royale at Alderson Broaddus University this Saturday.
