Position Summary

The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is designed to prepare students to earn their high school diploma, improve reading and math skills, as well as develop job readiness skills. The Adult Education Program is grant funded through the Maryland Department of Labor and the Federal Department of Labor through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

We are seeking instructors to fill vacancies in the following areas:

College Partnership High School Completion Instructor

This position provides high school equivalent instruction through a partnership with Garrett College Continuing Education & Workforce Development and Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS). This class will serve students who are credit deficient or otherwise unable to complete graduation requirements through the traditional high school setting, providing an alternative pathway toward earning a high school diploma. Instruction is delivered in a classroom setting and is designed to support academic achievement and postsecondary or career readiness.

Adult Basic Education and GED® Exam Preparation

This position provides supports to adult students who are preparing to earn their high school diploma, improve reading and math skills, and/or develop job readiness skills.

Position Duties

• Planning and conducting classroom instructional activities in math, social studies, science, and language arts for incarcerated individuals within the local detention center.
• Coordinating basic skills testing, progress tracking, and GED® Ready assessments.
• Maintaining grant-required student records.
• Assessing progress towards achieving individual student educational goals and program goals.
• Developing and implementing individualized and group lesson plans.
• Planning and conducting classroom activities designed to prepare students for a career or post-secondary training opportunities, considering the unique challenges of incarcerated individuals.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Teaching experience preferred but not required if the candidate has other experiences demonstrating the ability to meet position duty requirements.
• Possess knowledge of the principles and practices of adult education.
• Ability to provide individualized instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.
• Knowledge of and experience helping students with learning disabilities or differences.
• Familiarity with various instructional methods, including experiential and contextualized learning.
• Ability to use technology to meet students’ needs and accelerate learning, understanding the limitations and resources available in a detention center.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective learning environment for a diverse group of students, including those facing personal and environmental challenges.
• Ability to monitor student performance and provide support to promote successful completion of the program, particularly for incarcerated individuals aiming for reentry into society.

Garrett College is inviting applications for the full-time position of Men’s Soccer Coach and Athletics Assistant. This joint appointment position is responsible for all facets of the men’s soccer program including recruitment, coaching, scheduling, transportation, and fundraising. This position assists with all athletics daily operations. Also, this position is responsible for assisting with scheduling and managing athletic events, including practices and contests, and also non-athletic events requiring use of athletic facilities in R25.

The minimum education requirement for this position is a Bachelor’s degree. The applicant must have one year of coaching experience at the college level. The applicant must possess strong oral and written communication skills and be able to work as a team member in the college community to include students, staff, faculty, and administration across all departments.

This position is a working supervisory and operational leadership role responsible for coordinating workforce training programs and overseeing day-to-day operations at the College's Northern Outreach Center.

The coordinator supervises and evaluates adjunct trade and transportation instructors; coordinates instructional schedules and program operations; works with support staff; and assists prospective and enrolled students with admissions, orientation, enrollment, advising, and student engagement.

The coordinator also works directly with employers and community partners to identify workforce training needs, develop training opportunities, recruit students, and support successful program outcomes.

Qualifications: Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in workforce development or career training/education, or related industry experience.

Education/experience: Associate’s degree and 5 years of related work experience. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Hiring Range: Salary is $51,956 to $61,756 per year. Placement is based on relevant experience. Outstanding benefits package is available shortly upon hire.

Community Aquatics & Recreation Complex (CARC) is seeking applicants for Instructors for the I Can Swim program.

I Can Swim is a blended learning experience for Garrett County’s kindergarten students. It is a combination of water safety in the classroom and swim lessons in the pool.

The program runs for 6 weeks in the fall and 6 weeks in the spring during the school year. Hours are 9am-2pm Monday-Thursday. Instructors must enjoy working with children and have some background in aquatics and/or water safety with some knowledge of swimming.

Instructors are responsible for working with a team of instructors to keep the students safe while creating a fun learning environment. Instructors are responsible for classroom set up, classroom tear down, and day to day organization of classroom time.
