Garrett College had its largest turnout since 2016 at last Saturday's Explore Garrett event.
Local, out-of-state, and international students were all part of Garrett College's best-attended "Explore Garrett" open house in nearly a decade Saturday morning.
The event offered potential students the opportunity to discover more about specific academic programs as well as housing options, intercollegiate athletics, and support services.
"I thought this would be a good place to start before going to a huge university," said Southern Garrett High senior Sadie Crowell, who said free tuition through the Garrett College Scholarship Program was also attractive.
Brianna Tasker, who is also a Southern Garrett senior, indicated a good experience with online Garrett College classes via High School Dual Enrollment drew her to "Explore Garrett."
"I wanted to learn more about the College," said Tasker, noting she enjoyed her online courses because she "could do things at her own pace."
Lauren Athey, a senior at Frankfort (WV) High School, said the College's new radiologic technology program drew her to GC.
"There's nobody else around here that offers it," noted Athey.
Jeremiah Little, a Century (Sykesville, MD) High senior, was also attracted by a specific program, which in his case was Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology (NRWT).
"I like doing things outdoors and I thought this would be an interesting program," said Little.
Garrett College first came to Liam Bailie-Jackson's attention when his Ontario (Canada) Titans Baseball Club played here last fall in a scrimmage against the Lakers.
"I like the nice, quiet area and all the new facilities," said Bailie-Jackson.
Chief Academic Officer Christa Bowser gave an overview of GC's academic programs while Continuing Education and Workforce Development Dean Julie Yoder provided information on the College's workforce programs. Other speakers covered GC's housing, financial aid, academic support, and student activities.
"We're thrilled to welcome so many prospective students and families to campus – it's a great chance to highlight our faculty and dynamic student experience," said Director of Admissions and Recruitment Melissa Wass. "Seeing such energy and enthusiasm reaffirms our excitement for what's ahead."
