Garrett College officials closed and sealed the 2022 time capsule Wednesday afternoon as part of the College's 50th anniversary celebration. The event took place in Room 202 of the Daniel Offutt III STEM Center.

On September 23, 2021, the 1996 time capsule from the College's 25th anniversary was officially opened, which served as a kickoff to commemorating the graduation of the College's 50th class, which will take place in May.

According to GC's president, Dr. Richard Midcap, determining what to include in the time capsule has been an interesting, college-wide process.

"I really appreciate all the item submissions by our faculty, staff, students, Garrett College Foundation Board of Directors, and the Garrett College Board of Trustees," stated Midcap, whose personal contribution was a letter to those opening the time capsule, trying to explain what 2022 was like at Garrett College.

Midcap continued, "Among other things, I wrote about our soon-to-be open Performing Arts Center and our championship athletic teams. I also warned them that, with any luck, I would be the 86-year-old guy in the back of the room with a GC polo shirt and sweat pants."

In addition to artifacts received by the Garrett College community, the Garrett County Government and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce also made contributions.

The next time capsule will be opened twenty-five-years from now, in the year 2047. To better preserve the submitted items and history of the College and the community, College officials decided to display the 2022 time capsule in the STEM Center.
