Garrett College notches first region wins, but also suffers another 1-run setback

Lakers sweep Montgomery College, get swept by Hagerstown CC

Garrett College’s baseball team picked up its first region wins while sweeping Montgomery College last Saturday, stretching the Lakers’ winning streak to three games. GCs, however, couldn’t keep the positive momentum going, dropping to 1-5 in 1-run games on Sunday while getting swept by Hagerstown Community College.

Elijah Hanible (triple, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Brandon Lucas (RBI) each went 2-for-3 and Darrick Broadwater (3 RBI) slammed a home run as the Lakers rallied to beat Montgomery, 7-6, in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Joseph DeSiena and Patrick Bart each contributed doubles to Garrett’s 9-hit attack.

Reliever Kelan Hoover earned the victory, allowing 6 runs – but just 2 earned – in 5 innings with 7 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Bradley Bozic started and pitched 2 scoreless innings.

Lucas (double, 2 runs, RBI) and DeSiena (run) each had 2 hits as the Lakers completed the sweep of their NJCAA Division II Region 20 opponents with an 8-3 triumph in the nightcap. Hanible (1 hit) scored twice, Isaac Bittinger cracked a solo homer, and Zach Hallenbeck had a hit, a run and an RBI. Chance Moore (2 RBI) and Luis Rodriguez (RBI) each had a hit and a walk.

Starter Dylan McCartney and reliever Moore combined on a 4-hitter and did not allow an earned run. McCartney pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk with 4 strikeouts. Moore yielded 3 unearned runs on 3 hits with a strikeout.

Hagerstown used an 8-run second inning to break a 2-2 tie and put together a 9-run fourth while beating the Lakers, 21-5 in 5 innings, in Sunday’s opener. Brenden Moshos went 3-for-3 with a triple and a homer while driving in 5 runs and scoring 4 times to lead the Hawks.

Brennan White had a double and 2 RBI for GC. Laker starting pitcher Sergei Veres took the loss, yielding 4 earned runs on a hit and 3 walks while facing 9 batters before getting chased during Hagerstown’s second-inning explosion.

GC dropped a 9-8 decision to the Hawks in the nightcap as Hagerstown broke a 6-6 tie with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lakers fought gamely in their last at bat, scoring twice in the top of the seventh before winning reliever James Walsh (2-0) shut the door on GC. Walsh allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.

Josh Clapsaddle went 3-for-3 with a homer, a triple, 3 runs and 3 RBI to spark Hagerstown in the nightcap.

Lucas doubled and homered while scoring twice and driving in 2 runs. Rodriguez (3 runs, 2 RBI) also homered for the Lakers.

Bittinger (2 hits, RBI) and Hallenbeck (RBI) also doubled for GC and Moore (2 runs) had a triple among his 2 hits.

Bart, the third of 4 Garrett pitchers, took the loss, yielding 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and a walk with 2 strikeouts.

The Lakers (9-16 overall, 2-6 conference) are now 2-7 in NJCAA Division II Region 20 play.
