Garrett College volleyball team extends Skipjacks
Chesapeake rallies for win after Lady Lakers take 1st set
Garrett College head coach Brittany Jackson is looking for incremental improvement as her all-freshman squad moves through its 2022 women’s volleyball season. Jackson saw some of that improvement last Friday night as the Lady Lakers won their first set of the season before falling to host Chesapeake College, 22-25, 25-18, 25-9, and 25-19.
“We played smart, consistent volleyball throughout that first set,” said Jackson. “The team really wanted to win, and they did whatever they could to not let the ball hit the floor.”
Jackson said the Lady Lakers played much more tentatively in the final three sets, which played a key role in the match loss.
“We started to play timidly and as a result we started to make some errors,” she said.
Daphne Harman (team-high seven digs) and Abi Hall (five digs) each had nine kills for GC. Josie Canales recorded a team-high 22 assists and a match-high seven aces for the Lady Lakers.
“Abi, Josie and Daphne all really played great,” said Jackson. “The team overall had good energy and really wanted to win that first set.”
Bianca Potts (team-high six aces) had a match-high 12 kills for Chesapeake. Three of her Skipjack teammates – Erica Barrow (match-high 17 digs), Alexis Bates (match-high 25 assists), and Emma Stolzfus – each contributed eight kills.
Chesapeake ended up with a 41-22 advantage in kills, illustrating the Skipjacks’ offensive aggressiveness.
Montgomery College (13-11) swept the Lady Lakers, 25-2, 25-3, and 25-10, on Saturday. MC’s dominating effort included a 34-3 advantage in kills, 22-2 edge in aces, and a 24-4 margin in digs.
Hall had two kills while Canales had four assists and four digs to lead the Lady Lakers (0-13) in those categories.
Garrett College plays a tri-match Saturday at Frederick Community College. The Lady Lakers take on Harford Community College at 2 p.m. and battle host FCC at 4 p.m.
