Eleven students in Garrett College’s Medical Billing and Coding program are preparing for the national certification exam.
The students are currently completing their capstone projects, demonstrating the skills learned over months of coursework. Once capstone projects are completed, they will be eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam, a nationally recognized credential offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
The program was held entirely online via Zoom, offering flexibility for students to attend from virtually anywhere.
"That flexibility proved especially valuable, as several students were able to continue their studies uninterrupted even after moving or traveling out of town," said Program Coordinator Doug Beitzel. "The online format allowed for broad participation while maintaining the program’s high standards and rigor."
Beitzel said students studied medical terminology, anatomy, diagnostic and procedural coding, healthcare reimbursement systems, and regulatory guidelines. He noted the program emphasizes real-world application, accuracy, and attention to detail – essential skills in the fast-growing field of medical coding.
Beitzel noted individuals with medical billing and coding background are entering a high-demand field.
"The demand for skilled medical billing and coding professionals remains strong," said Beitzel. "According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of medical records and health information specialists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, driven by an increased need for accurate coding and documentation in healthcare services.
"Certified coders are in high demand in hospitals, private practices, insurance companies, and remote work environments – making this career path both versatile and in-demand," added Beitzel.
Garrett College is now accepting applications for the Fall 2025 Medical Billing and Coding program. Scholarship funding is available to assist eligible students with program costs. With the flexibility of remote learning and strong career prospects, Beitzel said this is an ideal opportunity for those looking to start or advance a career in healthcare administration.
