Jones leads Lakers as GC snaps 4-game skid

McCullough calls win team's 'most well-rounded performance'

McHenry, MD – Darius Jones scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Lakers into double figures as Garrett College defeated Community College of Beaver County, 79-64, Sunday afternoon to snap a four-game men's basketball losing streak.

"It was a great team win," said GC head coach Matt McCullough. "We had key contributions from everyone, and I thought overall it was our most well-rounded performance of the season."

Lamont Powell scored 18 points while Jhaiden Wilson and Zeke Edwards scored 10 each for the Lakers. Lamondre Gregg had 7 points, Dalton Wiles chipped in 6, Kobe Tigney added 4 and Mekhi Price contributed 3 as all 8 Lakers found the scoring column.

The Lakers (8-6) have been fighting post-holiday illnesses throughout the team, but McCullough said his squad has made significant strides toward regaining its collective health.

"We've faced a lot of adversity as a team this past month," said McCullough. "To have guys return and be able to give that kind of effort with minimum practice time was really cool to see."

Garrett built a 36-26 halftime lead on the way to the victory.

The Titans – 10-7 overall and unbeaten (6-0) in the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference – were led by Daniel Felix's 14 points. Tanner Mathos and Malcolm Murphy added 12 each, while John Taylor scored 10 points.

Garrett College travels to Keyser, W.Va. Monday night to play Potomac State College of West Virginia University in a 7 p.m. game. The Lakers return home Wednesday to host the College of Southern Maryland in a 6 p.m. Maryland Junior College Athletic Association contest.

CATONSVILLE – Christopher Johnson scored a career-high 31 points Friday night as the Cardinals overcame an early, double-digit deficit to defeat the short-handed Lakers.

Johnson (12 rebounds, 4 steals) had 5 points, including the go-ahead basket, in a 11-0 run that wiped out a 49-44 Laker lead. GC twice rallied to tie the game, the last time at 66-66 on a basket by Lamont Powell (18 points), but Catonsville retook the lead for good on a basket by Joacquin Gonzalez (19 points, 7 rebounds).

The Cardinals were still clinging to a 2-point lead, 78-76, after Lamondre Gregg's basket with 1:30 to play, but GC wouldn't score again. Laker Jhaiden Wilson had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute, but missed on a 3-point attempt.

Keith Bullock, Jr. was the third Cardinal in double figures with 12 points.

Darius Jones led Garrett College with 20 points while Wilson (11 points) and Gregg (10 points) also reached double-digits.
