MAERDAF grant provides for stand up paddleboard instruction at Garrett College
GC's Peterson and students now certified by ACA
Terry Peterson, GC's associate professor of adventure sports, is pictured out on the Youghiogheny Lake, during a recent Stand up Paddleboard (SUP) course. Peterson, along with four adventure sports students, are now certified to provide SUP instruction through the American Canoe Association (ACA).
Garrett College's adventure sports management program is offering Stand up Paddleboard (SUP) instruction as a result of a grant awarded from the Maryland Agricultural Education & Rural Development Assistance Fund (MAERDAF), administered by the Rural Maryland Council and the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
The grant provided for the purchase of SUP equipment; support for Terry Peterson, GC's associate professor of adventure sports, to become a certified American Canoe Association (ACA) SUP Instructor; and funding for a group of four students enrolled in the College's adventure sports program, to also become certified ACA SUP instructors.
Peterson developed a SUP instructional curriculum of three courses including: Introduction to SUP, SUP Techniques Development, and SUP Instructor Development.
These courses will be offered on a regular basis and are open to the general public, either as a college credit course or as a continuing education course. For more information, contact the adventure sports program at Garrett College at 301-387-3330.
