McHenry, MD – Fourteen Garrett College students have completed their classroom training and are preparing for externship experiences as part of GC's Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) program.
Classroom preparation, which was held three nights a week, combined hands-on learning with virtual instruction as classes met once a week in person and twice weekly on Zoom.
"The hybrid format allowed students to balance their studies with work and personal responsibilities, while still receiving the critical hands-on training needed in the field of phlebotomy," said Program Coordinator Doug Beitzel. "Throughout the program, students gained knowledge in anatomy, specimen collection, safety protocols, and patient interaction – all essential skills for a successful career in healthcare."
Each student will now complete a supervised clinical experience to apply their skills in a real-world setting. This practical experience is a key step in preparing for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam.
"Once their externship is complete, students will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam," said Beitzel, characterizing the exam as "a milestone that opens doors to employment in hospitals, labs, physician offices, and other healthcare environments."
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
"With an aging population, and an ongoing need for blood testing in diagnostics and medical procedures, demand for skilled, certified phlebotomy technicians remains strong across the country," said Beitzel. "Those entering the field can expect job stability, flexible work settings, and opportunities for advancement within the healthcare system."
Applications are now open for the next CPT program, which will begin in spring 2026. Those interested in joining the program or seeking more information are encouraged to contact Beitzel at 301-387-3772 or doug.beitzel@garrettcollege.edu.
